Xbox Live announcement for Windows Phone teased, what could it be?

We could go on and on about how Xbox Live has disappointed us in the past, but lately the XBL crew at Microsoft have made up for it with plenty of great games and weekly deals on games they probably shouldn't have charged much for in the first place. Still, we yearn for Microsoft to really deliver the AAA gaming experience the Xbox Live brand is supposed to represent.

Fortunately it looks like some kind of gaming-related announcement is in the works. @PlayXBLA, an official Xbox Live-related Twitter account teased "pretty cool Windows Phone game news" that was supposed to come out today. Well for about half of the United States, the day is already done so it looks like the announcement has been slightly delayed, but the tweet hasn't been deleted so that's a good sign.

We have a feeling Microsoft is prepping another gaming program for the titles announced at E3 a few months ago (similar to Must Have Games). Or Microsoft will finally talk about Xbox Live multiplayer gaming for Mango. What do you think it could be?

China blocking Windows Phone Marketplace downloads?

It's hard for us as United States residents to really feel just how frustrating of an experience the international support (or lack thereof) for Windows Phone is, but in this case we think we get it. WPSauce reports that many users in China, including themselves, have been unable to properly access the Marketplace for the last three days or so. Here's what their investigation has yielded so far:

In the past 3 days or so, most Chinese WP7 users in my circle (myself included) had this problem: the Marketplace tile shows a certain number of apps could be updated, but when we click update, the progress bar stays "pending" like forever, then suddenly surge to 100%, and ends up "attention required" fail right away. The ISPs or carriers we had this problem on include: - Beijing Unicom home ADSL - Beijing Unicom 3G - Shanghai Telecom ADSL - Shanghai Unicom 3G - China Mobile Fujian division 2G (worked briefly an hour ago and now as dead as a brick again) - Zhejiang Unicom

Plus they go on to say that app purchases are failing as well, but not before charging your card or phone bill. Even worse? Apparently China's "Great Firewall" is the main culprit behind all of this, after they discovered a router using an American VPN (a technique where the router thinks it is receiving USA internet service) has been working perfectly this entire time. With Windows Phone set to expand Chinese input and display languages with Mango, this could prove to be a troublesome obstacle if Microsoft can't find a way around this for its users.

Trio of Xbox Live Indie Games headed to Windows Phone

Yesterday we heard news about Doodle Jump and Sally's Salon developer GameHouse planning to release five new Xbox Live games in the future, but those were all casual and lame. Want some real gaming meat? Look no further than Xbox Live Indie Games developers. WP7 Connect sat down with three teams at the Indie Games Uprising event and discovered that all three are planning to port their already XNA-complete titles to Windows Phone's open arms. It's unclear whether or not these games could be blessed as official Xbox Live games on Windows Phone, but judging by their high quality they could make a pretty convincing argument to Microsoft if they need to. Jump past the break for details about Doom & Destiny, KamiCats, and T.E.C. 3001 and when you can expect to see them. (Remember that all screenshots and video reflect the Xbox 360 versions of each game, so don't get too excited.)

Will our heroes be able to find their way home without losing themselves in laughs and bad jokes?

GameHouse announces five Xbox Live games in the works

We complain about Xbox Live quite a bit, but one thing that's remained pretty consistent is the release-after-release schedule Microsoft has managed to maintain every single week since launch. That's no easy feat and we imagine the Xbox Live crew at Redmond could use a holiday, but GameHouse is being cruel and just can't do that for them. WPCentral interviewed the developer of Doodle Jump and Sally's Salon, and in the process got a pretty good scoop out of it. GameHouse is planning an additional five Xbox Live games to be released for Windows Phone in the future, which would probably make them the most prevalent developer in the Marketplace. Here are the goods WPCentral was able to squeeze out of them:

  • Collapse!: GameHouse’s very first PC game comes to Windows Phone. It’s a match-three puzzler in which a stack of blocks rises from the bottom of the screen. Players frantically tap groups of three of more colored blocks in order to eliminate them. Customizable characters, multiple gameplay modes, and bosses make for a full-featured package.
  • Delicious!: Like GameHouse’s Sally’s Salon Luxury Edition, Delicious! is a time management game. Players control Emily as she serves customers at a variety of food venues. Each location features unique minigames, keeping the gameplay fresh and tasty.
  • TextTwist 2: A word jumble game in which gamers receive a selection of letters and try to find all possible words that those letters can spell.
  • Cake Mania Main Street: A time management game with four totally distinct locations: a bakery, a flower shop, a fast food joint, and a sushi house. Wacky problem customers like vampires and pirates keep the pressure on.
  • NCIS: The Game from the TV show: Help the cast of the popular crime drama solve several different cases by completing various minigames. This looks a bit like Women’s Murder Club, but with a stronger focus on story and more gameplay variety.

Not a bad bunch, right? We're especially intrigued by Collapse! and TestTwist 2. Those of you who consider yourselves 'real gamers' may wince at the sight of casual titles, but Microsoft is aiming to satisfy everybody so put your bias aside and you may find one of these games more enjoyable than you may have thought. Unfortunately no timeline was given for when we can expect to see any of these games, but we're assuming these may be sprinkled into the mix for this Fall's lineup. For more about GameHouse, check out WPCentral's interview of Ken Murphy.

XBL Wednesday: Cro-Mag Rally

It's Wednesday and do you know what that means? New Xbox Live games for Windows Phone!

This week’s new Xbox Live game is Cro-Mag Rally by Pangea Software. For those who don't know, this prehistoric kart racing game has been around for a long time now. Since its debut in 1998 on the Mac the game has become quite popular and is now making the transition to Microsoft's newest platform. Here is the official description of the game:

Cro-Mag Rally is the wildest racing 3D game since man invented the wheel! You are a speed-hungry caveman named Brog who races through the Stone, Bronze, and Iron Ages in primitive vehicles with primitive weapons! By far the most entertaining and original game for Windows Phone 7!

XBL Deal of the Week: ilomilo

Xbox Live Deal of the Week gets you gaming on the cheap. Every Wednesday an Xbox Live game goes on sale and the discount stays in effect until the new Deal is released.

This week's Deal is ilomilo by SouthEnd Entertainment. This game was one of the most hyped before its release shortly after the launch of Windows Phone 7, and it turned out to be a phenomenal game. Rich graphics, a quirky art style, and deceivingly hard gameplay. This one is undeniably an awesome deal that I know many may have been waiting for before taking the plunge. Here's the official description of the game:

Help reunite ilo and milo with a new update that include 23 additional levels, 2 new environment settings and 2 new cubes!

ilomilo is a puzzle game where the player controls two friends named ilo and milo. The two friends always seem to get separated from each other in the surrealistic and ever changing world they inhabit. ilomilo presents puzzles where the player will have to use a great deal of three dimensional thinking to succeed. The world of ilomilo is made of cubes, and ilo and milo can walk any side of the cubes, as well as move cubes around. The player controls both ilo and milo, and will have to make them cooperate to unite them.

ilomilo has dropped from $4.99 to $2.99 for the rest of the week. The standard free trial is also available.

Nintendo apologizes to early adopters for 3DS price cut

Nintendo chief Satoru Iwata has apologized to early adopters of his company's 3DS portable for dropping its price so soon after launch.

"In the past, there have been price drops for video game systems some time after their release in order to broaden the user base further," Iwata wrote in a letter posted to his company's Web site and translated by Giant Bomb. "However, never before has Nintendo chosen to issue such a dramatic price drop less than 6 months after a system release."

According to Iwata (Google Translate page), the price drop was due to the company's desire to reassure "software creators and those on the retail side that are not confident that the Nintendo 3DS is a worthy successor to the DS and will achieve a similarly broad user base.
"
Last week, Nintendo announced that it would drop the price of its 3DS worldwide. In the U.S., consumers will find the portable, which allows users to play games in 3D without the need for special glasses, on sale for $169.99 starting on August 12. The 3DS launched with a price tag of $249.99.

By dropping the 3DS price right now, Nintendo is risking upsetting early adopters that bought the portable at its higher price. And in Iwata's letter, he acknowledged that.

"We are all too keenly aware that those of you who supported us by purchasing the 3DS in the beginning may feel betrayed and criticize this decision," he wrote.

"Those customers who purchased the 3DS at the very beginning are extremely important to us," he continued. "We know that there is nothing we can do to completely make up for the feeling that you are being punished for buying the system early."

But Nintendo is going to try. The company has said that those who own a 3DS prior to the price drop and log on to the 3DS eShop before August 12 will receive 20 free games as part of its Ambassador Program. According to the company, 10 of the titles will come from its library of Virtual Console NES games, including Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda. The other 10 games will be Virtual Console Game Boy Advance titles, including Super Mario Advance 3 and Wario.

Offering freebies to customers following a quick price drop is by no means unprecedented, and in the past, has worked quite well for companies. One of the most notable examples was Apple's decision in 2007 to offer early adopters a $100 store credit after the company dropped the price of its original iPhone $200 just a couple months after it launched.

"Even though we are making the right decision to lower the price of iPhone, and even though the technology road is bumpy, we need to do a better job taking care of our early iPhone customers as we aggressively go after new ones with a lower price," Apple CEO Steve Jobs Wrote at the time. "Our early customers trusted us, and we must live up to that trust with our actions in moments like these."

For Nintendo, there is a lot riding on the 3DS price drop, considering the portable's less-than-stellar sales record. During the company's first fiscal quarter ended June 30, Nintendo sold just 710,000 3DS units worldwide. In the U.S., the company sold only 110,000 3DS units during the period.

The letter was posted to Nintendo’s Japanese website — here’s the full translation courtesy of GameInformer:
To Those Customers Who Bought A Nintendo 3DS Before The Price Change

Greetings, everyone. This is Satoru Iwata from Nintendo.

Thank you very much for purchasing a Nintendo 3DS.

We have just announced a price drop for the Nintendo 3DS system effective on August 11 [August 12 in North America].

In the past, there have been price drops for video game systems some time after their release in order to broaden the user base further. However, never before has Nintendo chosen to issue such a dramatic price drop less than 6 months after a system release.

We are all too keenly aware that those of you who supported us by purchasing the 3DS in the beginning may feel betrayed and criticize this decision.

This unprecedented timing for a price cut is because the situation has changed greatly since we originally launched the 3DS. We decided it was necessary to take this drastic step in order to ensure that large numbers of users will continue to enjoy the 3DS in the future.

If the software creators and those on the retail side are not confident that the Nintendo 3DS is a worthy successor to the DS and will achieve a similarly broad (user) base, it will be impossible for the 3DS to gain popularity, acquire a wide range of software, and eventually create the product cycle necessary for everyone to be satisfied with the system.

Those customers who purchased the 3DS at the very beginning are extremely important to us. We know that there is nothing we can do to completely make up for the feeling that you are being punished for buying the system early. Still, we would like to offer the following as a sign of our appreciation to you.

    [3DS Ambassador program details]

We feel a strong responsibility to develop the 3DS as a platform — to ensure that, in the end, everyone is satisfied; we will make every effort to do so.

Additionally, we know everyone is waiting for Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7. They are scheduled for release in November and December, respectively, so we ask for your patience until then.

Thank you again, and we look forward to your continued support.

Zune HD gets new and updated apps, longs for so much more

The Zune HD isn't quite dead yet after all and it looks like Microsoft has finally added a few new apps for those with the O.G. Metro UI-based touchscreen device. Inside the Circle gives us the full dirt on what to expect when you fire up your Zune this morning and it's pretty great; you're getting seven new games which is phenomenal and two new apps including a Calendar. In addition to those, three apps have seen updates as well. Here's the full list:
  • New Apps
    • Finger Paint
    • Calendar
  • Updated Apps/Games
    • Echoes
    • Email
    • Penalty! Flick Soccer
  • Games
    • Trash Throw
    • Slider Puzzle
    • ColorSpill
    • Splatter Bug
    • Vine Climb
    • Decoder Ring
    • Tug-O-War
It's awesome to see Microsoft still supporting their little-iPod-Touch-competitor-that-could and we're frankly impressed by this wave of new downloadable goodies. Now, about that Windows Phone-based Zune we've been wanting so badly...

Angry Birds gets updated with 90 more levels, we're a little less Angry now

We recently went on a little rant a few weeks back about how Angry Birds for Windows Phone has less content than other platforms. Comparing the most current 1.6.1 version of the game versus the  1.4.2 version, the Windows Phone port lacks about 105 levels. Rovio and Innogiant Ltd. didn't tell us anything about the state of future updates, so we were worried Windows Phone would get left high and dry.

Well funny story: Rovio just updated the port to v1.1 and makes up for about 90 of those missing levels. Not bad! In terms of Angry Birds versions, we've jumped up from 1.4.2 to 1.5.3 which is pretty big. Yeah, we're still missing the other 15 but at least we're catching up at a decent pace!

If you haven't tried the game yet, we highly recommend you read our review. Then see the game or the update for yourself by clicking on the tile below.

New Rhythm Heaven and 3DS Lead the Charts in Japan

The Nintendo 3DS might be going through a rough patch at the moment, as seen by the fact that the company is set to slash the price significantly to make customers more interested, but the device continues to do very well in Japan where it has managed to top the video game hardware sales chart yet again.

The Nintendo handheld has sold 31,826 units during the week that ended on July 24, according to the figures compiled by Japanese tracking firm Media Create, which is about 15,000 less than it has managed during the previous seven-day period.

Meanwhile second place was locked up by the PlayStation Portable from Sony, which managed to sell 26,854 units, while the last place on the podium predictably went to the PlayStation 3 which moved 23,343 consoles to players.

The Wii has again had a pretty weak time, though not as bad as some weeks during the early part of the year, selling 17,114 units while the various members of the DSi family are hovering around the 5,000 units sales mark.

The PSP Go refuses to die and has managed to sell 14 devices.

When it comes to video games, the big performer of the week has been newcomer Everyone's Rhythm Heaven for the Nintendo Wii, which managed to sell 118,173 units during its first week on store shelves.

The Capcom published Capcom’s Sengoku Basara Chronicle Heroes for the PlayStation Portable also did well during its first week and managed to get 82,798 copies to eager players while No More Heroes: Red Zone Edition captured third spot with 40,313 units sold.

The rest of the top ten is made up of Inazuma Eleven Strikers, Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2011, Taiko Drum Master Portable DX, Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2011, Noora and the Time Studio: The Witch of the Misty Forest, Alice Madness Returns and Wii Sports Resort.

Download 'Colosseum' for Android RPG Now

Developed by the popular mobile games publisher and developer GAMEVIL, Collosseum for Android is now available for download from Android Market.

The game has been categorized as RPG, but judging by the gameplay, Colosseum is just a simple, but addictive hack-and-slash game.

Basically, players are challenged to defend themselves against endless waves of monsters, while they are 'confined' in a coliseum, the Roman version of an arena.

Obviously, players will have a wide range of weapons at their disposal to face off and defeat various types of monsters to defeat, including a variety of melee and ranged weapons, such as swords, maces, throwing knives, bombs and more.

Even though it may sound easy to beat, players will have to employ different tactics and master the skills of their various melee and ranged weapons if they want to be successful in this endeavor, otherwise they will quickly succumb against the throng of attacking monsters.

However, mastering weapons is not the only tactic needed to successfully fend off the waves of monster, as the game also offers players the option to use magic effects such as ice, lightning and fire.

We're excited to finally bring Colosseum to Android and we're also working on new versions too. As part of deal done with GAMEVIL's Partner Fund, COCOSOFT has developed a great pickup-and-play RPG title that has garnered many fans, and we're happy now to bring it to Android so players can finally join in on the fun,” said Kyu Lee, head of GAMEVIL USA.

Furthermore, each slayed monster will give players certain amounts of money that can be used to upgrade their weapons and equipment inventory.

Only after each round successfully completed, victorious heroes will be rewarded with loot for upgrading their equipment and gaining new weapons.

Colosseum for Android is now available for download from Android Market for $0.99 and is compatible with all smartphones running Android 2.1 or newer.

XBL Deal of the Week: Parachute Panic

Xbox Live Deal of the Week gets you gaming on the cheap. Every Wednesday an Xbox Live game goes on sale and the discount stays in effect until the new Deal is released.

This week's Deal is Parachute Panic by FDG Entertainment. The game was released a little while back and was revered for its unique hand-drawn graphical style and addictive gameplay. That praise has held up with the game staying at a strong 4-star rating in the Marketplace from user reviews. Parachute Panic was already quite cheap before at $2.99 so an extra buck off the total is a nice bonus. Here's the official description of the game:

In this unique casual game, you must help an army of parachutists land safely in the boats. Beware the imminent dangers, such as the rotor blades of passing helicopters, sharks, thunder clouds and UFOs. The game contains beautiful hand-drawn graphics that give the game a stunning and distinctive look. There are also some comic animations when, for example, one of the skydivers breathes his last breath in a failed encounter with the enemy. Catchy acapella music and awesome sound effects enhance the game world. We had lots of fun creating this game and hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Parachute Panic has dropped from $2.99 to $1.99 for the rest of the week. The standard free trial is also available.

Crackdown 2: Project Sunburst bites the dust, early adopters outraged

Oh Crackdown 2: Project Sunburst, we hardly knew ye! Well we don't think we'll be getting any alone time with it anymore. The innovative but troubled Xbox Live game was originally pulled from the Marketplace due to bugs and complaints, but now the dev team has come out and said they've decided to end the project altogether. They are offering anyone who bought Project Sunburst in the last 60 days a refund, but apparently a lot of gamers who bought the game earlier are more than a little upset with this move.

According to users posting their opinions on the Facebook wall of the developer, the servers that host the game have been turned off along with the game being pulled, which means that anyone trying to play the game (whether they bought it earlier or more recently) won't be able to because it's an online-only title. Others say the gamae has been broken from its launch with broken Achievements and other bugs. Here's a few of the comments:

I think everyone should get a refund since it was broken since day one. You couldn't get all the achievements even if you wanted to.

Why are only people how bought it 60 days ago getting a refund, no one can use it anymore because there is no server. Refund everyone or put the game back up, the bug was nothing!

i want my money back! i even cannot play the game anymore. i bought the game in april 2011 .... fu microsoft...

The game is literally dead space on their phone and the developer has yet to say exactly why they decided to cancel the game. We're planning to contact the team to verify whether the server shutdown is true or not, but if it is then not outright refunding everyone or at least keeping a smaller server up for those to play the game on is highly questionable.

Game Review: Word Arena

In case you haven't noticed, we like word games. Z-Games Studio's Word Arena is yet another competitive word game that pits players against one another online. They were gracious enough to send us a copy of the game early before Word Arena's official release to the Marketplace later tonight and we've been putting the competitive word game through its paces. Find out what we thought of it after the break.

The Basics
For anyone who's played either Wordament or Wordrix's online component, we think you'll find yourselves right at home playing Z-Games' latest. The game is Boggle for the mobile internet age, where players compete worldwide for glory. The game itself is a 4x4 grid of letters arranged randomly and you drag your finger across adjacent letters to string together a word. Any word you find gets you points, and the more complex or obscure the word is the more points you get. Sounds easy, but add in the two-minute time limit and the fact that you're competing against everyone in the world and you better be ready to throw the gloves off.

Where Word Arena differentiates itself from other games is in its multiplayer-centric features. While you can't play users head to head, you can interact with other players quite a bit while playing on the international battlefield. Adding friends is easily done by highlighting their name at the end of each game. Then the game will keep track of them and you can compare scores with the global leaderboards or just with the Friends leaderboard. The game includes 'Messages', a player-to-player chat that users can contact each other with while in-game. Messages also support push notifications to let you know when you've received a new message if you're out of the game.

It looks like a version 3.0 product instead of version 1.0
The Good
There's the expression, "You never get a second chance to make a first impression", and fortunately for Word Arena it won't have to worry about any of that. What really wowed us was the beautiful production quality of the game; it looks like a version 3.0 product instead of version 1.0. The main menu features slick animations with an always-moving background, and even picks up on your phone's accent color to create a matching look. When you tap on items the letters are highlighted just like they are in-game, or if you tap on icons they highlight and quickly fade with the rest of the screen as it transitions to the next area. The little things go a long way to make that memorable first impression, and that's one area where Word Arena triumphs. We're also surprised by just how natural the gameplay feels. Word Arena is fast and the game is immediately intuitive. We also love the offline 'Practice' mode which lets us addicts build our vocabulary without the stress of a time limit (time can be added as you play) or by using our precious data plans.

All of those are great features, but our true excitement for Word Arena are its amazing community features. While none are revolutionary, the Messages player-to-player chat is a killer feature in our opinion. Having chat in an online-oriented game is the most obvious feature move to take and yet we still love its implementation here. It keeps track of all of your friends and you tap on their names to see a short conversation view. Then you just type and send whatever you want. It's simple, easy, and truly the best feature of the game despite having a Beta label attached to it.

Word Arena definitely won't be winning any originality awards.
The Bad
Word Arena is an incredibly nice product for being version 1.0, but thats hardly a surprise when you take a glance at reigning word-game champ Wordament. It's undeniable that the game is almost a carbon copy of You vs. the Internet's popular game and Word Arena definitely won't be winning any originality awards. Also despite how fast it generally feels, there's still a few areas where Word Arena is obviously a little undercooked. The most noticeable issue is when you're playing the game online and new ads begin to load. On slower data connections we noticed a few seconds of lag while ads were loading which temporarily froze the game and therefore affected our time limit. We also noticed that the Results page was extremely laggy in some cases when switching between the categories of common words, uncommon words, and words found. Finally, the hardest thing Word Arena will have to overcome is the fact that no one is playing it yet. The game feels very empty at the moment and that's because it's a format that thrives when a community surrounds it. For now Word Arena doesn't have that and they may need to be aggressive if they plan to get users to play it when so many are already invested in Wordament.

Conclusion
Z-Games Studios has turned out an impressive new addition to the online word game category that improves upon a successful formula in almost every single way. Word Arena does get penalized for its lack of originality and obviously needs to gain traction in order to have more than just a handful of players, but the game is of such great quality that we find it hard to complain about much else. The Messages feature is one we could really see as the game's best selling point--it really turns an otherwise solo experience into an effective group one. All in all we highly recommend you check out Word Arena. It may not have the crowd yet, but there's a solid foundation which it can grow upon and we can't wait to see that happen.

Note: You vs. the Internet, developers of Wordament, contacted us earlier today to request removal of this review due to a possible legal issue surrounding their intellectual property rights. However we have decided to republish the review with some revisions. But we will still comply with You vs. the Internet's concerns and therefore we will not be directly linking to the game. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Xbox Live Wednesday: Tentacles

It's Wednesday and do you know what that means? New Xbox Live games for Windows Phone!

This week’s new Xbox Live game is Tentacles by Press Play. For those who don't remember, this game was actually announced at this year's E3 alongside a slew of other games (which included last week's Beards & Beaks). Another thing worth pointing out is that Tentacles is 100% exclusive to Windows Phone! Just make a sandwich while it's downloading: the game is an enormous 158 MB. Here is the official description of the game:

Tap the screen in Tentacles and experience 40 finger breaking levels, amazing boss fights and marvel at the truly ground breaking and intuitive gameplay.

Think fast, move smart, keep eating. Enemies stand in your way and you must rip out their eyeballs as you attempt to defeat mad scientist Dr. Phluff. Where will this final battle take place? Have a guess. Nope, not even close!!

Dr. Phluff has always meddled with the order of nature and this time he sought to create the cutest animal ever conceived. He failed. In a disastrous but not entirely unexpected turn of events his experiment was a catastrophe and he created a being of darkness. Black, heartless and with zero desire to be nice, kind, or worse of all cute. Yes, he created YOU! A slimy black blob with three tentacles, a claw, and a never ending appetite for eyeballs.

Tentacles is a completely new take on the platform genre. Use your tentacles to make your way through Dr. Phluff. Yes, that’s right, you’re actually inside him. It is a ghoulish and ghastly world inhabited by other genetically modified monsters created by Dr. Phluff’s experiments. Guess what, they’re all hungry and you just made the menu. Use your tentacle skills to outrun Dr. Phluff’s acid attacks and face off against bad-ass creatures in awesome boss battles.

Tentacles is available in the Marketplace for $4.99 along with the standard free trial.
