'WP Bench' Shows How Your Windows Phone Holds Up to the Competition

Are your friends jerks? Are they pompous Apple fanboys or rebellious Google anarchists? Alright, not everyone who owns an iOS device or Android device is a silly fanboy, but if your friends are you're probably sick and tired of them bashing on your shiny new Windows Phone. Well, next time they try to throw Quadrant scores in your face you fire straight back with the app WP Bench.

WP BENCH is performance benchmark for Windows Phone 7 devices. WP BENCH tests your CPU, GPU, memory, storage, display and battery.

    - CPU singlethreaded performance- CPU multithreaded performance- Memory read/write speed- Storage read/write speed- GPU performance- Display color reproduction- Battery life tester

WP BENCH is first benchmark for WP7 and it's made by creator of well known (and first too) Compute Shader 5 benchmark for PC called ComputeMark.

Everything works as advertised and the battery life tester should be enough to piss off any snooty Thunderbolt owners out there too! WP Bench is available in the Marketplace for free.

'Space Tube' Brings Futuristic Racing to Windows Phone

There's little argument in the gaming world that among all of the alternative-racing games out there (i.e. racing games that don't mimic reality), the WipeOut series is one of the best. Intense speed, arcade-style weapons and trademark visuals have cemented the franchise as some of the best racing games ever. The WipeOut series has even had tremendous success on a portable platform, the PSP. Yet sadly, Sony owns the racing franchise so the chances of it appearing on other platforms are nonexistent. Luckily, Space Tube is here to fill that void by offering a slick first-person racer in the same tradition as that great series:
Space Tube is an adrenaline and action-packed racing game that lets you feel the 3D power of Windows Phone 7! Take the control over an amazing fast space ship and take your journey through space and time. Compete in 4 different game modes or try the infinite mode to immortalize yourself in the leaderboard!
    - Smooth and colorful graphics with some appealing effects
    - 27 levels with 4 game modes (Classic, Adrenaline, Time Attack and Freestyle)
    - 3 difficulty levels (Beginner, Professional and Expert)
    - Challenging Infinite Mode
    - Many different barricades and pickups such as boosts or repair items
    - Ultimate speed feeling
    - Highscores and unlockable trophies
    - Detailed statistics
    - Soundtrack by „Professor Kliq“
The game is available on the Marketplace at a cheaper price now of $1.29 and includes a free trial. Hit up the download page by clicking the tile below.

Quick Impressions: Spectra Gets A New Look With Latest Update

We recently reviewed the game Spectra here on WPD, calling it "a tricky game that hooks you in and doesn't let go". The game won a Great! rating from us for its challenging gameplay and strong replay value. There was only one thing holding Spectra back from greatness: it was ugly as sin.

Luckily Andrew Bunn, creator of the game, heard our prayers and decided to slap on a fresh new coat of paint with the recently released update to version 1.1. Trust us, it makes a huge difference. Spectra probably won't be the next The Harvest in terms of graphics, but making it less cringe-worthy than it was before is certainly worth noting.

Not much else has changed besides the graphics; Spectra is still a one-of-a-kind puzzle platformer. Couple the innovative gameplay with leaderboards and you'll be coming back for more and more. Check out Spectra in the Marketplace by clicking on the tile below.

Rumor: HTC Trophy Launching On Verizon May 12th?

Just two days ago we saw two big hints that the HTC Trophy for Verizon could finally be on its way to store shelves. Big Red customers have been waiting since the first leak from way back in December, but now WPCentral reports that the Trophy could only be a few weeks away, allegedly launching on May 12th. Also, according to a user on Twitter, training with Windows Phone 7 will soon begin for Verizon employees. However all of this is unconfirmed so far and based on the Trophy's track record for pinning down a date, you probably shouldn't get your hopes too high.

Thought: Dell is the Odd Man Out

It's not hard to say that the hardware currently available for Windows Phone 7 isn't great. While the OS itself is unique, sexy and exciting, manufacturers seemed hesitant to truly innovate for Microsoft's latest. Some would attribute the lack of manufacturer innovation to Microsoft's rigid hardware restrictions, but at the end of the day we still got leftovers with hot sauce thrown on 'em and OEMs called it "new".

Yet oddly enough, the one manufacturer that has been completely absent from today's smartphone invasion managed to outperform already proven market leaders: Dell. Even more odd is that Dell is the absolute least talked about manufacturer when it comes to Windows Phone news or users, despite some serious love for their hardware. Hell, I've only explicitly talked about the Dell Venue Pro three times total on the site.

So what the heck happened to Dell?

Only a few months after Windows Phone 7 was announced to the world at MWC 2010 and detailed at MIX '10 (and still had the 'Series' appendage tacked on the end), Engadget landed a huge exclusive leak. Dell's tentative smartphone lineup for the 2010 fiscal year was out in the wild and notably featured some handsome Android devices like the Flash, Smoke and Thunder along with Android-powered tablets. But the biggest story of that leak was undoubtedly the Dell Lightning.

The Dell Venue Pro, once upon a time.
    Image via Engadget

The phone was drop-dead gorgeous and featured a 4.1" OLED display along with a portrait-sliding QWERTY keyboard. The form factor was unheard of at that size, with the only major modern smartphones utilizing it being the Palm Pre and, a few months later, the Blackberry Torch. The most interesting part? It was powered by Windows Phone 7. Of course you know the end to that fairy tale: the Dell Lightning became the Dell Venue Pro, and it was a launch device for Windows Phone 7 in November 2010.

Or at least that was the plan. Instead Dell suffered from serious quality control issues at launch, and were forced to delay the phone until it reappeared in early December. In hindsight, would the delay really have hurt Dell's chances to make it big with the Venue Pro? To fans of the operating system, maybe, but not to the general public.

The Venue Pro could have potentially become Windows Phone's Droid
No, where Dell really got hurt was the fact that it wasn't selling the phone in stores. Whether Dell couldn't convince a carrier to sell it or they just decided to sell it themselves, in the end that is probably the main reason why no one even mentions the Venue Pro anymore. But in many news outlets' opinions, the Venue Pro could have potentially become Windows Phone's Droid -- the killer phone that represented the OS at its best. Instead we received a cautious approach from a company that couldn't afford to take it so lax, especially being one of the few launch partners of a new operating system from Microsoft. What's even more puzzling is that before the launch, Dell seemed to be taking Windows Phone 7 even more seriously than the other manufacturers. In fact, the company was planning to transition over 25,000 employees using BlackBerrys to the Venue Pro which is certainly a bold move in any industry.

Yet at the end of the day, we're still left asking the same question: what the heck happened to Dell? Even then, another new question has risen: can Dell dig itself out of its own ditch and man up to play alongside the HTCs and Samsungs of the industry? Only time will tell but as far as we can see, there's always a loser and Dell is the odd man out.

'Pocket Recorder' Turns Your Phone Into A Full-Featured Voice Recorder

Have you ever wanted to use your phone as a microphone? Considering the fact that most Windows Phones are considered 'high-end' devices, all of them are loaded with pretty high quality microphones built right in. Plus smartphones are coming with plenty of storage space right now, and if you put two and two together you get an app like Pocket Recorder from Xochi Media. Here's a condensed version of the official description:
Pocket Recorder™ Pro will transform your Windows Phone 7 device into a full-fledged sound recording and editing tool. It supports. It is designed to allow you to quickly record, process, and sync items in an easy to use manner.
The voice recorder comes loaded with plenty of features including integration to the Music + Videos Hub, editing your recordings on the fly, desktop sync, email sync, full playback controls, and 'Screen Flip'. All of that comes inside one of the most slick implementations of the Metro UI yet. Pocket Recorder is available in the Marketplace in a Pro version for $0.99 and a free 'Lite' version. Quick Tip: Search Through Your Call History

Here's a Quick Tip for your Windows Phone:

The Search functionality in Windows Phone 7 isn't exactly as versatile as some would want. Universal Search is a feature sorely missing and even searching through apps would be welcome (which is luckily on the way). However, wherever Windows Phone 7 does search it does it extremely well. Did you know that you can search through your Call History? Here's the breakdown:
    1. Begin on the Start page (if you're not there yet, just tap on your  key.
    2. Tap on the Phone Tile.
    3. The first think you should see is a page entitled Call History. From there just press your key. Then the keyboard will pop up from below and a search field will drop from the top (see picture above for demonstration).
That's it! It's not exactly the same as Smart Dialing on other phones, but at least similar functionality is there.

DatPiff Mobile Brings Hip-Hop Love to Windows Phone

As an avid fan of rap and hip-hop, DatPiff.com is a vital resource for me. The site has tons of mixtapes from unknowns, like Childish Gambino, to household names, like Drake, and everything in between. DatPiff also has a huge library of music videos and extensively covers music news. So when DatPiff Mobile came out for Windows Phone 7, you could say I was pretty happy. Here's the official description:
Take DatPiff's extensive library of Mixtapes, Videos and Hip Hop News with you wherever you are! Search, stream, comment, rate and favorite on the go!
The app is quite nice and fully embraces the Metro design language with open arms. To be honest, the design is an improvement over the actual site itself offering very quick access to almost every feature and full community features all a finger's touch away. Got a 3DS? Take Your Cards Wherever You Are with '3DS AR Cards'

One of the most genuinely cool features of the Nintendo 3DS is the use of its cameras. Namely, the 3DS has an excellent implementation of augmented reality gaming and its so simply executed--just place any of the 'AR Cards' on a table, point the camera at the card and then you're instantly playing a minigame. Windows Phone 7 is getting a similar augmented reality feature with Mango later this year. The only real downside to the 3DS's execution of the camera trick is that you actually need the physical cards, and while they are small the prospect of taking cards wherever you go isn't exactly portable. But, if you have a Windows Phone you can finally ditch the cards with the novel app 3DS AR Cards:
You just picked up your new 3DS and you want to show off the augmented reality (AR), but you forgot your cards!
Fear not, boot up this app (from the games hub), select the card that you want and away you go!
Supports disabling the lockscreen while the card is fullscreen, so that you can keep playing without worrying about the phone locking on you midway.
Cards: Question Mark Block, Mario, Link, Kirby, Samus, Pikmin
The app simply uses your phone instead of the card to get some AR gaming on the go. Some user reviews even allege it actually works better than the cards because the 3DS requires you to be in a well-lit area but a smartphone's backlight is strong enough to do the job.

The app is available in the marketplace in a paid version for $0.99 or a free ad-supported version; you can check them out by clicking on the tiles below.

Pepsi Refresh vending kiosks to add gift capability

Nice idea from the Pepsi Refresh project, so far only (US) text enabled, but extrapolate the possibility to properly web connected / socially connected units and imagine the potential.

Short term it's probably best not to dwell on or scrutinise the data capture / privacy angles but Apple have provided more than enough food for that fire this week.

Interestingly, whilst running a quick search for the URL of the Pepsi Refresh project to embed in this post I noticed (dynamic) image results being triggered on the right hand side of the results, changing as you overed over different links. That pleases me inner nerd and feeds my inner curiosity. Better go and do some snooping on Google algorithm changes.

    A miscellany of digital treasure

My lovely friend Dan over at Aegis produces a fabulous quarterly round up which so nicely encapsulates the large pile of things I have on my "must get around to posting about but haven't had a moment to do so" list that I'm just going to embed it and say enjoy.

    Thanks Dan!

Best Buy, Verizon Site Hint at Trophy Launch in the Near Future

The Verizon-branded HTC Trophy has been in the works for a long time--Engadget first caught wind of it back in December--but despite missing the rumored March 24th launch date, new signs tease that the wait will soon be over. Early today, PocketNow noticed that Verizon's first Windows Phone showed up in Best Buy's database. Don't be scared off by the $600 price tag though, it's supposed to be a placeholder for the unsubsidized device. Then most recently, WPCentral spotted a new support forum specifically for Windows Phone 7 on Verizon's website. Clearly something is going on in the world of Big Red when it comes to Windows Phones, and hopefully that something will turn out to be a shiny new phone subscribers of the nation's largest carrier have been waiting for since last year.

Mango To Support Facebook Video Uploads and Places

WMPoweruser just got their hands on a pretty sweet morsel of Mango (or 7.5, whatever) info this morning. Someone with "VIP" access received an email from Microsoft all the way back during MWC, and the message explicitly states that Mango will be providing even more support for Facebook services. Specifically, we're looking at direct video uploads to Facebook, a feature sorely missing as of right now. WPCentral just this morning heard about 7.5 supporting some kind of check-in system and it turns out that will be powered by Facebook Places. Why would Microsoft want to include check-ins built into the OS? Maybe we can expect a new Location Hub which fans have been wishing for since we heard rumors about turn-by-turn directions. Either way, Mango is only getting bigger by the day and more features that real people would want to use are slowly being revealed. Hell, post Mango the world won't even need a real Facebook phone--it's already got Windows Phone.

Thought: Should RIM Jump Ship to Windows Phone?

The industry has begun to notice a few signs of trouble recently for Research In Motion, the company behind BlackBerry smartphones. Despite being among one of the largest global market share holders in the industry, innovation has stalled in their product line for a few years now. RIM has attempted to break this pattern by introducing v6.0 of their OS but the Torch, its flagship device, was largely panned by critics and ignored by consumers. Most recently the company released their first foray into tablets with the Playbook, but despite a promising outlook for the touch-based QNX platform the tablet uses, the product still isn't as good as it should be. Not only does RIM have some serious product issues, but their executives have begun to feel the heat from the public. During a recent interview with the BBC, founder and co-CEO Mike Lazaridis abruptly left, claiming that the questions being asked were unfair and that RIM's admittedly high numbers spoke for itself.

Any of that sound a little familiar? Yes, RIM is starting to sound a lot like Nokia and could be facing a serious change in the near future unless their products are significantly overhauled. Just like Nokia, it's hard not to imagine the company seriously considering other platform options at this point in the game. Well, why not Windows Phone 7? The proposition sounds like wishful thinking, but there are some reasons it could pan out. For one, plenty of manufacturers like Samsung and HTC have shown that handling multiple platforms on their devices isn't very difficult and RIM would only have to worry about the hardware part of the equation, which is something they already do very well (despite their outdated designs). For another, RIM wouldn't even have to invest as heavily with Microsoft as Nokia did--instead they could take the cautious approach and only release a few 'test' devices to see how they fare with the public. There is a reason upstart OEMs in the industry are avoiding Android and that's because it requires a significant amount of investment to stay competitive and the market is currently saturated with well-established brands.

RIM could also bring over their Messaging services especially BBM, the sole reason their operating system is still relevant, to those phones which would guarantee sales for those looking for a more touch-friendly OS but still live and die by the popular IM client. Microsoft's Chassis 2 specifications (unveiled at last year's MIX '10) was designed to take on the classic BlackBerry form factor with a vertical QWERTY keyboard and a touchscreen up top. RIM could spearhead development of this Chassis and thus preserve its signature style while still appealing to their users looking for a newer platform.

There is little doubt that RIM is as much the 800-pound gorilla as Nokia is when it comes to the mobile industry, but without any real effort at innovation the company could suffer the slow death Nokia just barely avoided. Microsoft may be the way out.

WP7 Marketplace Reaches 15,000 Apps, No Signs of Stopping

It happened just last night at the stroke of midnight -- the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace ballooned past 15,000 applications.

A little over six weeks ago, we were celebrating 10,000 apps in the Marketplace. Just think about that: 5,000 new apps in six weeks. Windows Phone 7 was growing pretty rapidly before, but MIX '11 definitely had to be a strong influence during this 5k stretch. Soon apps will be getting a huge overhaul with the new Mango toolkit next month and the next update showing off tighter integration between the OS and apps than ever, it's the perfect time to jump on the bandwagon if you were holding out before!

LG Quantum Not So Super With WM6.5 [Windows Phone Fail]

Welcome to another edition of Windows Phone Fail in which we lovingly mock copycats, poor photoshops, and other amusing screw ups related to Windows Phone.

After borking up a week ago, you would think the managers in charge of product placement on Smallville would have learned their lesson. Instead, Pocketnow spotted the utterly embarrassing image of an LG Quantum running Windows Mobile 6.5. Admittedly, this is an improvement over their previous fiasco and hey, they did at least get a phone that actually runs a Windows smartphone platform. Too bad they missed a generation.

P.S. The second Windows Phone Fail...in a single day!

Fake HD7 Spotted In China with 4.8" Screen, Identity Crisis [Windows Phone Fail]

Welcome to another edition of Windows Phone Fail in which we lovingly mock copycats, poor photoshops, and other amusing screw ups related to Windows Phone.

What is the true sign that your platform has become a success? We'll give you a hint: it isn't the number of developers nor is it the fastest growing app marketplace in the industry. It's not even sales. No, the real sign of success in this industry is when China decides to copycat one of your phones with a fake operating system and all.

Well, Microsoft should be patting themselves on the back because that's exactly what has happened thanks to China's infamous Shanzai markets. This time, the manufacturer even one-upped the original by bumping up the already large HD7's 4.3" display to 4.8". Too bad the resolution lost about 80 pixels in the process -- it's hard to accommodate a larger screen! For some added irony, the fake WP7 on the device is actually a heavily skinned version of Windows Mobile 6.5, so don't plan on any Xbox Live gaming fun (despite the misleading tile). If you're in the mood for a few more chuckles check out the shots of this beast from the East at the source link.

Quick Impressions: SuperTube Receives Another Update

A little over a week ago we gave our impressions of version 1.2 of SuperTube, the popular HD streaming/downloading YouTube app. This past week SuperTube was once again updated, and the app is finally starting to slow down with adding features and instead making some much needed overall improvements.

    Here's what's changed in version 1.3:
    • Custom background
    • Browse the videos with low quality
    • Optimize the function of playing the video in HQ and HD by 3G connection
    • Shortcut to SuperTube within the Zune Hub
We recently got our hands on the latest update and found the app was notably improved in some key areas. For one, the added option of low quality is great as I am sure many would settle for less data-consuming videos over 3G. SuperTube also links into the Music + Videos Hub now, which provides fast seamless access to previously viewed videos or the app itself. Finally, the app has included a nice aesthetic feature to load up custom backgrounds to the home panorama, which you can see in action above.

However, the same issues with HD playback randomly failing are still present in the latest version. As its headlining feature, SuperTube's HD still disappoints and we still find it difficult to recommend the full version for $1.29. Then again, the past few updates have been a testament to Fast Code's dedication to improving the app and it's not hard to say version 1.3 is the best yet. If you want to get your hands on the app yourself, check it out in the Marketplace by clicking on the tile below.

NoMango? Microsoft Likely Going With 'Windows Phone 7.5'

There was some confusion during MIX '11 regarding what the upcoming Mango update was going to be called. For example, the presentation itself was called 'Windows Phone Next' and it could have been a possibility since we've heard Windows 8 being called 'Windows Next' before. Then Joe Belfiore confirmed that Mango was their internal codename while on-stage during the keynote, but in one of a later session's slides the update was referred to as '7.5'. Thanks to a slip-up on the Microsoft Partner Network site, the confusion seems to be clearing in favor of the latter.

Microsoft's Brandon Watson spoke up via Twitter on the rumor but only said they have yet to officially announce anything. However, WPCentral's Daniel Rubino raises up a valid point: Microsoft has been struggling to name WP7 since its inception. The original name was Windows Phone 7 Series and after much public criticism Microsoft decided to drop the odd appendage, and today we have Windows Phone 7. This coupled with the naming twists-and-turns in MIX makes it apparent that the software giant is pretty concerned about how its product is marketed (and for good reason).

    Game Review: Spectra

From classic arcade titles like Donkey Kong to three-dimensional mind benders like Portal, platforming games with puzzle elements have a special place in the hearts of many a gamer. It still remains one of the most popular genres in gaming, despite the current generation's chronic addiction to hyper-realistic twitch shooters. One could even argue platforming games have received their biggest boost in popularity yet thanks to the ongoing smartphone revolution, which has placed gaming devices into millions of people's hands. One game capitalizing on mobile gaming's admiration of platforming is Spectra and while it isn't a platformer in the traditional sense, the arcade-style game instead creates a compelling experience by taking a simple color-based concept and absolutely running with it.

Like all great arcade games, the premise and execution of Spectra seems stupidly simple at first
Like all great arcade games, the premise and execution of Spectra seems stupidly simple at first: you are a small block that is constantly moving from side-to-side and your objective is to climb up the platforms as high as possible before dying. But here's the wild card--your block can change colors and you can only jump onto platforms that match the color you are. For example, if you're blue the only platforms that are "solid" for you to land on are blue. Don't underestimate the game's apparent simplicity--it will make you scream in fury and frustration if you screw up.

Speaking of frustration, Spectra's controls are fortunately just the opposite. The game gives you two areas of control: the color-chooser on the left side and the rest of the screen dedicated to the platforming action. Also in that area, you have to tap anywhere in order to make your block jump. But the controls are the simple part; the real challenge is how you use them. As your block moves from side to side, you have to make sure that you time your jump right and that your block is the correct color in order to land on the platform. So if you're red and you jump perfectly but the platform is blue and you can't change color in time, you fall and could die. Again, it's difficulty is hard to express in words but trust us, Spectra will make you pull your hair out...in a good way of course. Somehow the game manages to hook you in and bring you back for more sadistic torture.

Spectra will make you pull your hair out...in a good way of course.
Despite the frustrating and thus addictive nature of its gameplay, Spectra does an excellent job of making sure the game doesn't become too repetitive. Every time you start a new game, the level is randomly generated ensuring that you receive a new head-smashing experience every time. Another added element for replay value is the support of leaderboards for local and online.

Yet the honeymoon period had to end sometime and sadly, Spectra isn't perfect. If you couldn't already tell, the game isn't so much the looker you may have been hoping for. It's just ugly--the epitome of design deemed 'functional'. A game so rich in concept and skillful in execution looks no better than E.T. from the heydays of the Atari 2600. But one does have to appreciate the game's willingness to sacrifice aesthetics for functionality, and admittedly Spectra is very easy to pick up and play. So while the retro look is a little too faithful to gaming's early years of trial-and-error, it more than makes up for it with its intuitive execution.

    Overall
Spectra is one of those gems that is perfectly suited to today's mobile gaming platforms and would have rocked in a dusty arcade twenty years ago. Its shortcomings in aesthetics tend to make an unfavorable first impression, but once past that you'll be treated to a tricky game that hooks you in and doesn't let go.
