After using the service for three weeks, I can not imagine letting go of Spotify, and for a variety of music publications, it will be my go-to service. It is above-board and legally, the artists get paid and $ 9.99 for premium service, it pays for people who otherwise would buy at least one album a month. On the other hand, some people simply do not need or want access to a deep reservoir of music. They keep 10 albums or CD with your stereo, and that's all you need. Mathematically, it is a good chance that one of these disks is 10 Eagles "Their Greatest Hits, 1971-1975" in Spotify is not for them at any level.

Spotify: The Future Of Music Is Here

Service hit Europe in music finally launched in the United States. Spotify is here and already changed the way I listen to music. JD Roth of Get Rich Slowly is a big fan, too.

What is Spotify?

Spotify is a service that lets you listen to any song in the library Spotify - at any time. It's kind of iTunes as you can find what you want, create playlists, and sort by artist or album or genre. The difference is that instead of taking only from your music library, you have access to all libraries in the song Spotify 15 million. JD is compared with a musical version of Netflix, but with fewer complications and a better selection. Post continues after the video.

Using Spotify Jumps IPhone

No one really knows what Spotify U.S. growth has been given a month ago to start the month, but it seems to make the impact of a U.S. iPhone user. ONAV, a service that reduces your data on your iPhone, you can keep track of what people use information, and therefore provides interesting statistics.

The application of Spotify is well aware of the numerous data on the use of control, such as the ability to disable synchronization of playlists to listen to 3G and online, among other options.

1400000 Spotify says Americans are using it, although it has been available for a handful of European countries since 2008. Despite this, ONAV Spotify also said the iPhone has reached a prevalence of 4% in July - through France, the Netherlands and Great Britain, who are veterans of Spotify.

Onavo said:

"Sweden continues to lead the free music streaming service is required, as one of five users of the iPhone in Sweden, a listener is Spotify, closely followed by Norway (16%) and Spain (6 %). The Americans are no strangers to the cloud-based streaming music services like Rhapsody and RDIO, but by analyzing the use of mobile data for July, it seems in love with American music surely missed Spotify and was jealous of their friends across the pond. "

RDIO Hits Spotify App And MOG Protectors

Years of RDIO streaming service has launched an application optimized for the Apple iPhone, but you can not download from iTunes.

The application comes with a 7 day free trial but then costs $ 14.99 a month if purchased through iTunes, or $ 9.99 per month if purchased through the site RDIO own (which reflect a recent policy review of iTunes purchase). RDIO began with an iPhone last year, and also web clients and office.

RDIO has a catalog of more than 10 million songs to choose and stream on demand. Spotify as MOG and it is heavy on the social networking site. It allows you to tap into playlists with your friends on Facebook and Twitter, or members RDIO others, the following proposals for their walls. It also highlights new releases and best-selling songs, and recommendations based on what feeds you have listened before.

Malthe Sigurdsson, vice president of product design RDIO, said that the version of the iPad was the most desirable feature of the year. "Album deliver to reveal track list, scroll to a portrait and landscape are wonderfully animated and control, and lists are cleverly arranged to show the album in high definition," he said in a statement.

Slacker, award-winning Choosing a publisher PCMag music streaming service, Pandora, also has versions iPad, but focus more on delivering songs personalized and individual stations based on viewing habits.

RDIO launched last summer, Skype founder Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis founders of Kazaa.

LazyWorm Apps teases LazyTube 3.0, watch for drool around this headline

Click image to see full size
I've said it before and I'll say it again: LazyTube is one of my favorite apps available in the Marketplace today. While SuperTube offers a superior feature set that can't be ignored, I'm totally smitten by LazyTube's intuitive, unique UI. Plus I dig the live tile support too because I follow a ton of subscriptions and it's great to have. As you may be able to imagine, we are eagerly awaiting to see what LazyWorm Apps will offer us with version 3.0 once Mango rolls around this Fall; fortunately we just got our first look and our jaws shattered when they hit the floor.

To your right there's a preview at the new live tile which does a cool visual trick to look like a cutout from the main logo. But the real star of this work of art is the new panorama interface; gone is the clutter of multiple panes and lists replaced instead with a wonderful new thumbnails view with a nice text overlay. We can also see in the far right an area called 'My Tube' which mimics the app list and offers all of those community features we crave. To be honest, this looks more like a Hub than an app and that's a huge compliment.

LazyWorm Apps has told us there are no hard dates as to when we can expect version 3.0 to hit the Marketplace but says it will definitely be after Mango's official launch. Of course you can follow LazyWorm Apps on their Twitter and Facebook accounts to get more previews and teases of version 3.0 in the last stretch of development. Plus constructive criticism is appreciated so make sure you comment here as well as on their social network accounts about what you think!

In case you haven't tried LazyTube or their free YouTube app, you can find both in the Marketplace by clicking on their respective tiles below.

New video compares new Gyroscope to Motion Sensor, makes us dizzy

One odd omission from Windows Phone 7 at launch was the lack of gyroscope support, a feature that would allow augmented reality apps and more sophisticated motion sensing games to enter the Marketplace. It's a pretty standard feature across nearly all smartphones today and fortunately Microsoft has graciously included it into Mango. Microsoft has also said these new gyro-enabled apps can still be compatible with older hardware lacking the feature thanks to a new Motion Sensor API that uses some math alongside the accelerometer to give the same effect, so no harm no foul.

But in reality how does the new gyroscope compare to the motion sensing-workaround? In the video above you can see for yourself and there's definitely a noticeable difference to our eyes. Of course the gyroscope is the Fujitsu IS12T on the left while the motion sensor is the HTC Trophy on the right. By rotating the devices around we can see that the IS12T is much more precise and one-to-one with real movements while the Trophy appears to be more 'floaty'. It's an interesting comparison and unfortunately proves that it is difficult to implement new features at the same level of performance as new hardware to older hardware.

P.S. If anyone can translate the subtitles in the video that would be super helpful! Just drop a comment below if you know some.

Group Messaging uses MMS by default, carriers always ruin a good thing

One of Mango's slickest features is Groups, where you can categorize contacts together and see all of their contact info as well as their social updates in one place. It looks great, works well and genuinely useful as long as you're willing to sort out your contacts like that. Unfortunately, there's one thing about messaging a Group that has gone unnoticed until now: by default the feature will use MMS (multimedia messaging service). Fortunately you can easily turn that off and switch back to SMS by going to Settings --> Applications --> Messaging and switching Group Text to 'Off'.

There's no telling as to why it uses this by default instead of regular old SMS but it's worth knowing because MMS is typically separate from your data plan (which is bull**** I might add) and therefore if you go over your limit you could get slapped with an abnormally larger bill. This wouldn't have been a big deal if SMS and MMS weren't billed separately from data (in reality they are using data) but unfortunately carriers rule the smartphone world and we have to play by their rules.

Molly Wood's thoughts on first week with Mango: "decidedly mixed"

For those who may not remember, Brandon Watson issued a serious challenge to a few web-celebs a couple of weeks ago asking them to try Mango. If they didn't like Mango, Microsoft would donate $1000 to the person's charity of choice. One of the aforementioned personalities involved in the challenge is CNET's Molly Wood and a few days ago she shared her early impressions, which you can watch above. Now she has posted up her complete thoughts on her first full week with Mango. She lays them out in a pros/cons list so here's the condensed version:
  • The Pros
    • Interface: "The Mango interface is lovely. The screen tiles are attractive and the "live tile" behavior (they update constantly with new Facebook images, flip-board incoming e-mail counters, and so on) is dynamic without being annoying."
    • Social: "Mango has integrated Facebook and Twitter support (and Windows Live and LinkedIn, for the record), and it's pretty nice."
    • Local: "Simple and elegant, and I dig it."
    • Autocomplete: "The autocomplete is awesome. It's accurate, it's less aggressive than the post-Gingerbread Android dictionary, and it seems to have a lot more words. Love it."
    • Speech: "I like. I've used it several times for composing texts and for launching searches."
  • The Cons
    • Speech: "Speech is there in Mango, but it's not there in Mango. [...] Android is doing speech to text light years better than Mango at this point, because it's integrated across the OS."
    • Turn by turn: "Here's what I don't understand, though. Why is the turn-by-turn navigation only audible when you tap the screen for directions!?"
    • Fit and finish: "I know I'm running a developer's build of Mango, but I also know it's probably not far off from finished, and there are more than a few oddities that make Mango feel like a first-gen product, instead of the 7.5th iteration on a long-lived mobile operating system. They're niggling, but they annoy."
    • Apps: "There's just no getting around that fact: the app support isn't quite there yet, and it'll have to get there before this platform can be truly competitive. I, at least, don't want to be the one at the party, or on the field shoot, who can't get the cool app that everyone else is downloading all around me."
For the most part we agree with her assessment. There were a few parts where she thought a feature wasn't available when it actually was. For example, adding phone numbers to the address book is done by tapping on the number in the Call History, while she assumed it was done by long-pressing on the number (which is fine to be a little confused about). Also, we still think we have plenty of apps and the Marketplace is only growing faster, but of course for her line of work she needs access to the latest popular apps which Windows Phone is still working on.

In conclusion she felt that Mango in its current state is a love-hate relationship (we definitely agree). Wood promised to continue using Mango and teased she plans to look more closely at Microsoft's many integrated services (like Office, SkyDrive, and Zune Pass) for Week 2. Stay tuned for that, but in the meantime you can finish reading her full Week 1 thoughts.

Rumor Smasher - August 12, 2011

Welcome to Rumor Smasher! Every Friday I attempt to tackle the week's Windows Phone rumors and tell you if they are really going to happen or not. This week Nokia is dominating the rumor mill but the equally as huge Samsung snuck one in before they noticed. Let's smash some rumors.

Nokia heading to AT&T and T-Mobile with affordable devices, Verizon with the high-end?

Our Take: It's definitely odd to us that AT&T and T-Mobile, the original Windows Phone launch partners here in the United States, would be getting the shaft on what will definitely be Microsoft's "hero" device. We sincerely doubt AT&T would miss the chance to get their hands on Nokia's high end Windows Phone. When it comes to T-Mobile it's a little more tricky -- they only officially support the HTC HD7 and have the Venue Pro coasting on their airwaves. But they do have pretty good relations with Nokia because they are the only carrier in the US that have still offered new Nokia Symbian devices each year.

When it comes to Verizon, we could definitely see it happen. Verizon has enough cash to throw around to secure pretty much any high end device they want to. But they were the very last carrier to offer a Windows Phone and many agreed at that point the Trophy wasn't worth it. Maybe Verizon is looking to get on the good side burned WP7 fans? They better be! The last part of the rumor is that the Sea Ray won't come to the US. At first we didn't believe it, but with the N9 skipping a lot of major countries (including the US) we think there's more to this than we thought. You can stay optimistic if you like, but Nokia is trying to be "carrier-friendly" so don't expect the Sea Ray to look quite the same when it launches here.

Will it Happen?: Carrier Stuff - Maybe / Sea Ray skipping US - Yes.

Nokia devices leaked in new video?

Our Take: Earlier this week we saw yet another leak from Nokia's camp as a very official-looking video. In the video we got our first look at a new, super-slim device running Windows Phone that bears a striking resemblance to the slick Samsung Focus. The device also has an interesting 'chin' beneath the hardware keys that matches the color of the back of the phone. So is this for real? Well we're finding it hard to think so. We definitely think the video itself is for real and it is from somewhere within Nokia. But when it comes to the new device, we think it's nothing more than a concept just like the other renders we've seen. Trust us, we'd love to see this device come out but we just don't think it's gonna happen.

Will it Happen?: Nope

Omnia W is the successor to the Omnia 7, certainly isn't pathetic

Our Take: Everyone is looking forward to a shiny new device from Samsung this Fall, and many want to see a phone ditch the plasticky feel of the Focus and opt for something more along the lines of the Omnia 7. With that came word of an Omnia W, a potential followup to the aforementioned launch device that brings along a 1 GHz CPU, 512 MB of RAM, 3.7-inch display, and a 5 megapixel camera. But Samsung recently came out to say the info that came with the device leak was "not accurate". Does that mean the Omnia W doesn't exist? Heck no! It just means that the details we received about the device may not be real. So don't be surprised if Samsung announces something very similar to the Omnia W.

Will it Happen?: Maybe

Mango launching September 1st, updates to begin before hardware?

Our Take: If Joe Belfiore himself says it's "just a rumor", then it's probably just a rumor. It seems too soon to us anyway.

Will it Happen?: Nope

Compal shipping 2 million Windows Phones to Nokia in September, release set for October

Our Take: The source of the rumor was a former IDG News journalist based out of Taiwan? Check. Nokia World is in October? Check. Nokia loves to launch new devices at Nokia World? Check. Well we think that just about does it for this one.

Will it Happen?: Duh.

Mango RTM build 7720 leaked, flashable to devices (Update)

Whoa! Someone over at XDA-Developers is quite the connected cool kid. User longshot442 has uploaded a build of what he claims to be the official Mango 7720 RTM which is flashable to any device that would have it. Members in the thread have confirmed that it does indeed work without conflict, so this looks like a universal build (similar to Microsoft's own beta builds). There are also instructions on how to do it yourself available here, but be warned that flashing a device is always risky. You could end up with a bricked device, so unless you know what you're doing we recommend you wait!

We're looking forward to seeing any new features pop up in 7720. (If you find one remember that you can always tip us so we can write an article about it.)

Update: Here's the in-progress list of devices that have been confirmed to work with this RTM leak:
  • HTC 7 Pro (and Arrive)

  • HTC HD7

  • HTC Mozart

  • HTC Trophy (International and Verizon)

  • LG Optimus 7

  • Samsung Focus v1.3

  • Samsung Omnia 7

Rumor: Compal shipping 2 million Windows Phones to Nokia in September, release set for October

We've certainly been having a lot of gossip this week, especially about Nokia. Now Nokia's licensed ODM Compal, the very same company that gave us the codenames Tango and Apollo, are rumored to be kicking Nokia manufacturing into high gear. That's according to Dan Nystedt, a former journalist for IDG News and The Wall Street Journal, who tweeted out the following message:

Nokia supplier, Compal, to start shipping Windows Phone 7 smartphones to Nokia in September, total 2 million in Q4, Taiwan media say.

So it looks like Compal is going to start shipping those devices to Nokia so the company can perform its final touches and stock up before a launch. When is that exactly? Many are assuming Nokia is going to sit tight until its own Nokia World 2011 event in late October, but there's a good chance they'll start shipping a few weeks before then. We imagine it would be tough to hold on to two million devices that the world wants to get their hands on (and those are chump numbers for Nokia). This is still a rumor so be warned, but we think this one is set to come true.

iPhone 5 Training Underway at Canadian Operator Rogers (Unconfirmed)

Canadian iPhone carrier Rogers Wireless has kicked off staff training with an eye on the iPhone 5 launch, according to a leaked internal document that clearly has employees preparing for a new Apple smartphone.

Reports are coming in from iPhoneinCanada and Cultofmac that Canadian wireless operator Rogers is giving its employees the heads up regarding an “iPhone Pre-Launch Training.”

The Apple-centric site recalls that such leaked documents have done well to confirm product launches in the past, though an ounce of skepticsm never hurts, may we add.

However, based on the wording in the leaked file, the next iPhone should arrive in a matter of weeks. From the original document:

“As of August 11th, the training for the iPhone pre-launch will start. Please complete this training once notified by the Just in Time (JIT) training coordinator in your site. the module is a 45 minute self-study; please make sure to complete the following training: iPhone Pre-Launch Training - Rogers Wireless 2011.”

The Rogers document only adds fuel to the fire of those who strongly believe the iPhone 5 will arrive this fall.
And why shouldn’t it? All the elements are there to make fall 2011 the perfect time to launch a new iPhone that will leverage at least two new Apple products - iCloud and the highly improved iOS 5.

There is some debate as to whether the actual device will be substantially different from the current hardware, but it is fair to assume that the 5.0 moniker deserves some cool new features that make the handset stand out.
After all, Apple cannot lose its reputation of being a constant innovator by launching the rumored iPhone 4S.

Perhaps a cheap, middle-class iPhone will be released as well. Word on the web is that it will have many ties with iCloud and that it may even be free for those who embrace the successor of MobileMe by getting themselves a paid plan.

Apple 'Changed' the Universe with the Release of OS X Lion

Apple has reportedly modified an iconic picture of the Andromeda galaxy originally produced by astrophotographer Robert Gendler in order to use it as the default wallpaper of Mac OS X Lion.

The Universe holds many galaxies like our own, the Milky Way - a spirally thingy made up of hundreds of billions of suns, one of which is eight light-minutes away from our Earth.

One such galaxy is Andromeda, a spiral pool of stars approximately 2.5 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Andromeda.

It was shot in all its splendor by astrophotographer Robert Gendler back in 2007.

His image is published in the 2008 Guiness Book of World Records as the Largest image (in pixel dimensions) of a spiral Galaxy ever taken.

David Kaplan, assistant professor of physics at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, sent boing boing a gif image showing the differences between the original picture and the one that serves as the default wallpaper in OS X 10.7.

It shows quite a few differences between them.

So, Kaplan told the blog, “Apple has once again altered the Universe according to their whim. They moved/removed many stars, and got rid of a whole galaxy. This is M110, which is one of M31?s [Andromeda's] satellites. The other big satellite, M32, is still there.”

The observation, of course, isn’t bad intended.

Rather, it’s a humorous take on the fact that Apple decided to brush out an entire galaxy so the image doesn't look cluttered, or too asymmetrical, perhaps.

Kaplan said he couldn't guarantee whether or not M110 (the galaxy Apple erased from the photo) was still observable in the night sky (again, most likely as a joke). But he said he was pretty sure Photoshop had something to do with the way Apple's wallpaper shows.

As Apple fans will agree, the Mac maker’s version of the Andromeda is, by far, more attractive, considering the vivid colors, the gradient lighting, the hues, you name it.

However, for something as elegant as the Cosmos, I for one disagree with Apple’s decision to doctor the image to such extent that an entire galaxy had to be removed for the sake of a wallpaper.

Apple Deals: $749 for 2010 Macbook Air, $929 for 3.06GHz iMac

Apple hasn’t very been keen to include any attractive offers on its Special Deals site lately, but there’s always something to pick when you’re looking to buy yourself a new computer.

Most of Apple’s Macs now have Intel Sandy Bridge processors, Thunderbolt I/O, and the latest mobile solutions in AMD graphics, but that doesn’t mean the company’s refurbished 2010 models are obsolete.

Not by far, actually. This October 2010 MacBook Air, for example, packs a 1.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, 2GB memory, 64GB flash storage, and NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics for the affordable price of $749.00.

The system is Lion-ready and it still a pack leader in the ultra-thin sector, despite competition catching up with Apple.

A refurbished Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server, for those who think more about work than play, saves its lucky buyer $250 and features a 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB memory, dual 500GB Serial ATA hard disk drives, an HDMI port with support for up to 1920-by-1200 resolution, and NVIDIA GeForce 320M with 256MB memory.

It goes for $749 and fully supports Lion Server. If you wish to install the latest OS prior to your purchase, Apple will charge a $49 fee. Otherwise, the system ships with Snow Leopard Server installed.
The now-discontinued White MacBook stands tall on Apple’s Deals section still.

Priced at $849 and saving its buyer $150, this Apple gem boasts a 13.3-inch LED-backlit glossy widescreen display, 2GB (2 x 1GB) of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM, 250GB Serial ATA @ 5400 rpm, 8x double-layer SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW), and NVIDIA GeForce 320M with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory.

If you’re the desktop type, go for the 21.5-inch iMac with a 3.06GHz Intel Core i3 processor, 4GB memory, 500GB hard drive, 8x SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW), and ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics, that can handle pretty much everything from Angry Birds to Photoshop. The machine is priced at $929 – a $170 discount.

Samsung: Omnia W leaked details "not accurate"

Looks like we have yet another rumor debunk on our hands! Yesterday we reported on a rumored Samsung Omnia W device which was said to include a 1GHz processor, 5 megapixel camera sensor, and a 3.7-inch display. The Omnia W was joined by a slew of Android smartphones and tablets as well, but now Samsung has come out to deny the information in this leak. Posting on the official Samsung Tomorrow blog, this was the following statement from the company (emphasis ours):

Some media have been reporting that Samsung is preparing to launch nine new smartphones and two new tablet devices. While Samsung is continuously working on new devices for our customers, the details being cited are not accurate in this case.

We appreciate the interest in our upcoming mobile devices and will share more information once its available.

So there you have it. Does this mean the Omnia W doesn't exist? We'll let you be the judge, but if you ask us there's a pretty good shot we'll see it pop up again in the future.

Joe Belfiore on September 1st Mango launch: "Just a rumor"

Well it looks like at least one rumor this week has been debunked. Windows Phone team leader Joe Belfiore just tweeted the above message. He only used 28 characters to address rumors about a major product launch, which is even more impressive considering this is Twitter we're talking about. So is this a denial? It sounds like it is, but Belfiore likes to tease his followers so it's tough to tell. For now just don't get your hopes up on that September 1st launch and we'll see how it goes from there, okay?

Fun Fact: Joe Belfiore uses MetroTwit! (You should too.)

HTC Mazaa shows off next-gen potential, performance that makes us drool

One very special student developer won quite the treat from Microsoft: an HTC Mazaa! There she is, and ain't she a beaut? Of course it's identical to the HTC Trophy, but it's the inside that counts and Mazaa certainly delivers there. XDA user Cpitt, the recipient of the phone, compared the WP Bench results of the HD7 to the Mazaa and the most obvious difference is the GPU. The Mazaa's 50 FPS more than doubled the HD7's performance of 23 FPS. Even more impressive was the Internet Explorer 9 performance, with the Mazaa clocking in 47 FPS with the Fishtank test compared to the HD7's 30. Very impressive stuff and if this is just the minimum we can expect to see from future hardware, sign us up!

Sliding Keyboard updated to v2.0, renamed to Slydr

Need your Swype fix and missing it deeply on your Windows Phone? We can't win every round and unfortunately due to Microsoft's tight control over the OS, we doubt we'll see Swype added as a keyboard option (unless Nokia can sneak it in). What's the next best option? How about Invoke IT Limited's Slydr, formerly known as Sliding Keyboard, to satisfy your needs? The app was just updated to v2.0 and brings along a ton of new international-friendly options. Here's the app description:

Slydr (Sliding Keyboard) is a standalone app. Windows Phone 7 in current form does not allow other keyboards. Slydr allows users to enter words by sliding over the keyboard rather than typing each entry. Version 2.0 contains custom built word dictionaries that contain most use words. Slydr also intelligently allows you to use accents automatically

The following language dictionaries / keyboard layouts are supported in the app
1. Catalan (Català)
2. Czech (Český)
3. Danish
4. German (Deutsch)
5. Dutch (Nederlands)

Yes, the app is a standalone and you're forced to use it and then copy-and-paste whatever you wrote so some may find it a bit useless. Rumor: Omnia W is the successor to the Omnia 7, certainly isn't pathetic

Today we have a rumor that is sure to make Omnia 7 owners excited. Samsung is supposedly going to put out an all new Omnia W handset which is most likely the successor to the popular aforementioned phone and will almost certainly run Mango. This was part of huge leak from HDBlog.it (Italian) of Samsung Mobile's upcoming portfolio of smartphones and tablets which we're just a bit jealous of.

Anyway, what's the Omnia W packing in its trunk? Here's what:
  • 1 GHz (?)

  • 512 MB RAM

  • 3.7 inches

  • 5 megapixels

  • Bluetooth

  • Wi-Fi

  • GPS

Now a few other Windows Phone sites are bashing on it and saying these specs are pathetic. However don't be fooled by that 1 GHz processor -- according to the new Chassis 1 requirements all Windows Phones have to follow, that should be the impressive 8x55 series which falls under the S2 category of performance. That's no slouch and while it is usually clocked at 1 GHz, the performance is still leaps and bounds better than what we've seen in this first generation hardware. Plus we've head HTC's using the same CPU in their upcoming hardware and they've clocked it all the way up to 1.5 GHz.

The rest of the specs do suggest the Omnia W could be a mid-range device, like the 3.7-inch display and the 5 megapixel camera, but don't underestimate Microsoft's bang-for-your-buck strategy!

Rumor: Mango launching September 1st, updates to begin before hardware?

We want Mango, like now. We think you do too. That's why this rumor will make you very, very happy. According to Pocket-Lint's "multiple trusted sources", Microsoft will be launching their Mango onslaught on the youngest day of September. This won't just be limited to new hardware either, which is of course included, but Pocket-Lint also claims that first-generation devices will also see updates begin to roll out from then as well. So why September 1st which is not exactly in the Fall season? Here's what they think:

The launch date, we now understand, has been chosen due to its importance in tieing in with IFA, Europe's largest consumer electronics show in Berlin, and means that companies like Samsung, Acer, ZTE and LG will be able to show off new devices with Mango installed.

That actually makes plenty of sense as IFA is a pretty huge event in the year (the biggest in Europe for smartphones besides Mobile World Congress). Plus we know that Microsoft is opening Mango app submissions starting August 22nd, so we figured the Mango launch couldn't be much later than that.

How does Nokia figure into the September 1st timeframe? Well, it looks like they don't. Nokia wasn't mentioned in this rumor while other OEMs were, and everyone is expecting their first device to launch at Nokia World 2011 which takes place in October. Pocket-Lint makes a good observation that Microsoft will perform a two-pronged attack during the Fall with its first wave of devices in September during back-to-school and then the Nokia devices on the brink of the holiday madness (and possibly go head-to-head with Apple).

Hold on to your seats.

HTC announces Beats partnership for high quality mobile audio, "Still D.R.E." never sounded better

Earlier today HTC sent out a last minute invite to the tech press about a "major announcement" for tomorrow morning. There were a myriad of predictions including new smartphones, a new tablet, or an announcement to strike up a patent deal with Apple. Oddly it looks like HTC themselves have let the cat out of the bag early and  even more bizarre is that it wasn't anything anyone could have predicted.

It turns out the company that brought you the sound-lovin' Surround is about to be accompanied by some Beats. HTC has announced they're in the process of purchasing 51% of Beats Electronics, the company headed by legendary rap and hip-hop producer Dr. Dre and known for its high-quality sound design (and obnoxiously-priced premium headphones). The deal is set to complete before the year ends.

The $300 million deal will result in the smartphone exclusive of Beats audio technology for HTC devices, while HP still has the exclusive on laptops and tablets. Obviously HTC's acquisition of Beats means we can look forward to new phones that include the brand, but we'll see just how high quality audio these next-generation devices can pump out over those cheap packed-in headphones worth fifty-cents (pun most certainly intended). Press release just after the break.
HTC and Beats by Dr. Dre Set to Introduce New Era in Mobile Audio

Strategic HTC investment to result in Beats-integrated HTC phones this fall

TAOYUAN, Taiwan and SANTA MONICA, Calif., Aug. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- HTC Corp., a global designer of mobile devices, today announced a strategic partnership and investment with Beats™ Electronics LLC., the company redefining the audio market with its iconic Beats by Dr. Dre™ audio experience. The two fast-growing brands will focus on bringing high performance sound to HTC phones.

"The HTC and Beats by Dr. Dre partnership is an opportunity for two world-class companies to redefine the smartphone industry and define the future," said Jimmy Iovine, chairman of Beats by Dr. Dre and chairman and CEO of Interscope Geffen A&M Records, which is a division of Universal Music Group and a stakeholder in Beats. "For Beats by Dr. Dre, this represents a critical step in our continued mission to clean up the destruction of audio caused by the digital revolution and reengineer how sound is delivered, so the consumer feels the music the way that the artist intended."

HTC and Beats have been working together to create superior mobile audio experiences for consumers, which will result in a line of HTC devices integrated with Beats sound innovations, available this fall.

"Beats has found a unique way to harness popular culture in a manner that is unlike any other brand today," said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corp. "It's an exciting brand that has been built around providing something very special, and we believe our strategic partnership will provide customers with unbeatable sound on HTC phones. We obsess over every detail of a consumer's mobile experience, and audio is a critical part of that experience."

HTC is known for unifying content, services and devices into unique mobile experiences. And Beats is known for its unique consumer brand appeal and ability to reproduce the full spectrum of sound captured in professional recording studios, allowing consumers to hear music the way the artist intended. Bringing these two great brands together will create superior mobile music and sound experiences while accelerating HTC's entry into the youth and accessories markets globally.

Beats Electronics will continue to operate autonomously - with Iovine as chairman and Luke Wood as president and chief operating officer - with its current business partnerships, including Monster Cable Products Inc., HP and Chrysler Group LLC. Iovine also will continue serving as chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M Records.

"Our customers have clearly responded to Beats and HTC, and Best Buy is proud to feature their products in our stores," said Brian J. Dunn, CEO, Best Buy. "We are committed to offering innovative and entertaining technologies that help consumers enhance their lives. Our customers expect that from us. The unique HTC Sense experience and the great sound of Beats provide prime examples of that focus."

Install Avast for Ubuntu 11.04/10.10/11.10

Antivirus software for Ubuntu Users – is it optional ? If you want to get protected from virus attacks or malwares, spywares..

Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) or 11.10 (Few alpha versions has arrived, the stable will be released after few months) or 10.10 or any Linux based distributions are very less prone to virus attacks or malwares, spywares (or any similar *wares). The reason is pretty straight forward – First Linux based operating systems are highly secure and the second reason is that Microsoft Windows (XP, Vista, 7 ..) has been the targeted systems for crackers / hackers or malicious programmers (may be due to the fact that most of the common users uses Microsoft Windows operating system).

Therefore, in general, you don’t need to install any antivirus software on Ubuntu; it’s OK!
If you want to try Avast then you need to download the debian package and install it – either from command line or using Ubuntu Software Center.

How to install Avast on Ubuntu (11.04/11.10/..)

step 1 : Download the debian package.
Download Free Avast Antivirus for Ubuntu

step 2 : Install the *.deb package by Right Click -> Open with Ubuntu Software Center, and click on install button and relax! or just enter the following command -
cd move_to_target_directory

sudo dpkg -i file_name.deb

step 3 : To start using avast antivirus software, You need to Register with avast to get a free license key (Don’t worry it’s free!). The license key will be delivered to your email address within 24 hours (usually withing a couple of hours).

step 4 : Start the program and enter the license key. That’s all!

Molly Wood talks about her Windows Phone Challenge, begs for more apps

CNET's Molly Wood was spotted having Android troubles on Twitter by Microsoft's Brandon Watson. One thing led to another, and Watson issued Wood a challenge to try out Windows Phone Mango instead. If she didn't like it, Watson would donate $1000 smackers to her favorite charity. Not a bad deal, and now Wood is holding up her end of the deal. She's just posted up the first video covering her initial day/week with her Mango'd up HTC Trophy and for the most part she's positive. However, when it comes to apps she's feeling the pain. For her full thoughts in this first week, check out the video above and head on over to her article on CNET for more.

Nokia devices leaked in new video? (Update 2)

Whoa! What do we have here? A new, leaked video claiming to be official from Nokia and showing off new devices, that's what! My Nokia Blog receives this video from a tipster who was allegedly a Microsoft employee and used a .ovi email address. The video itself looks legit to us despite recycling old images and footage. This could very well have been an internal video that was meant for employees or carriers, but we don't know anything for certain at this point. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy the tease after the break.

SourceMy Nokia Blog

Update: The video's been removed...which makes this about 1000x more legitimate than before. We'll see.

Update 2: I've reuploaded the video to our own YouTube channel if you missed it! Watch it below and enjoy.

Skype for Windows Phone will feel like "part of the phone", has deeper access to OS

We've been eagerly waiting to hear more about Skype's bright future as a product of Microsoft after being acquired for $8.5 billion earlier this year, but news has been few and far between. However with the Skype buyout to be completed by October, we were bound to start hearing more and that we have. Skype's vice president and general manager of products and marketing, Neil Stevens, had a discussion with Forbes and revealed quite a bit about their plans for Windows Phone.

Stevens confirmed that the forthcoming Skype app for Windows Phone will be a bit more special than other platforms, teasing that they plan "to create an app that doesn’t feel like app but, rather, part of the phone". He also went on to reveal that the app will have "greater access to deeper levels of the OS". It sounds like the Skype app will remain just that and may not even ship as part of the final build of Mango. Some may be disappointed to hear that, but the Skype buyout hasn't been completed yet and Stevens does go on to say "People don’t want to start an app when they’re making a call," so we think he understands the frustration.

How do you feel about Skype most likely remaining separate in Mango? Does it even matter since Skype will have "greater access" to the OS, or do you think a native experience would still be better?

Nokia President talks Windows Phones, Carriers, and America

Nokia: Apple iOS and Android are "outdated" from Venturebeat on Vimeo

Nokia's USA President Chris Weber seems to be making the rounds lately. Earlier Weber sat down with AllThingsD and revealed Symbian will be wiped out entirely in the United States. Now Weber returns in the above video interview with VentureBeat. In it he talks about how Microsoft is differentiating its OS from the reliance on apps, how Nokia is going to become the most "carrier-friendly" manufacturer, and how the company is readying itself to "act like a startup" when push comes to shove this Fall. It's a great interview and we recommend you watch it. There's also an accompanying article that goes more in-depth by mixing in parts of the interview with broad ideas Nokia is talking about, as well as off-screen talks with Weber about other snazzy new features in Mango. Read that here.

Weekly Poll: What feature do you want to see in Tango?

This Week's Poll
We've been hearing a lot about the still forthcoming Windows Phone Tango lately. First we heard a Compal employee slip the codename (along with Apollo), later we spotted a mysterious build number of 8200 in the wild, and only three days later we received the first (alleged) photo of one of Tango's features: content search. Earlier today we received our biggest hint at what Tango could mean for Microsoft in the long-run, with sources claiming the update will provide the framework for low-end devices and fuel Nokia's pursuit to recapture its global standing.

Putting all of that aside, let's geek out a bit. What feature do you want to see appear in Tango? We've added a few options in the poll below, like better multitasking (one of the things we hate in Mango), the inevitable Internet Explorer 10, full support for a Skype video chat client, a proper notifications screen for management, and finally better landscape support. But we've done one better: you can vote for two features in the poll! We figured some of you like more than one feature, so feel free to pick another. If you don't see one, click on 'Other' and leave a comment for us below so we can talk about it! So what are you waiting for? Vote now!

Last week's poll results for "Are you expecting a Nokia Windows Phone on August 17th?" were pretty darn interesting! Jump past the break to see them!

Last Week's Poll
Last week we asked you if you thought Nokia would really unveil a device at GamesCom 2011 on August 17th. Invitations heavily suggested it, but a day later sources denied that Nokia would. That didn't stop you from voting, and it turns out 42.86% of you think it really will happen after all. What was more interesting was the even split between Maybe and No, as both pulled in 28.57% of the votes. Well we'll see: we're only a week away from finding out!

Rumor: Nokia heading to AT&T and T-Mobile with affordable devices, Verizon with the high-end?

The Nokia Blog (which is unofficial by the way) has an interesting piece of gossip about Nokia's upcoming Windows Phone strategy in the United States. For one, their "very reliable source" claims the Sea Ray will not make its way stateside which is a surprising move. However it could be that carriers have had some influence over Nokia's devices and so the Sea Ray design may not have made the transition. The second piece of the rumor organizes how Nokia devices will be represented on each of the major carriers. AT&T and T-Mobile are said to receive "affordable" devices, which probably equates to a mid-range handset for between $100 and $150 on contract. Meanwhile Verizon, who was the very last to enter the Windows Phone race, is going to carry a high-end model. Nothing else was mentioned so we don't know what to make of this.

If this is true, how do you feel about AT&T and T-Mobile, the original Windows Phone launch partners, getting the shaft on a new Nokia while Verizon swoops in to yank the high-end? What about the seemingly left-out Sprint users out there?

Rumor: Tango to support low-end hardware, "all about Nokia"

There's been a certain amount of mystery surrounding what comes after the update we haven't even officially received yet. Yes, Tango has been the talk of rumortown lately with the update making a cameo in an app and flaunting some of its new features. The always-reliable Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet has come up with her own set of rumors from anonymous sources that could come true.

Apparently Tango is "all about Nokia", or more specifically the manufacturer's play to drive Windows Phones into the mid and low-end markets as quickly as possible. It wouldn't be the first time a seemingly minor Windows Phone update brought some hardware benefits, as you may recall NoDo brought support for CDMA handsets. However the rumor gets a little more bizarre from there; Tango may just come in two releases and "may be focused largely or even exclusively on the Asian market."

Speculation time! We're more than just a little confused as to how Tango will come as two releases, unless the tipster meant that one would be for high-end devices (for feature updates/bug fixes) while the other would be for the new mid/low-end (for hardware support). When it comes to the Asian market exclusivity of the update, we're left scratching our heads as one of Mango's most touted features is its expansion in Asian language support. However, we do recall ZTE saying their first Windows Phones would release early next year so maybe Tango is somehow related to that? Plus mid/low-end devices go hand-in-hand with Asian markets, so maybe Mango isn't enough in that aspect.

Well don't worry your little noggin' for now because before all of that comes Mango, and it's right around the corner!

Nokia's Symbian devices endangered in the United States, Windows Phone wiping them out for good

This shouldn't come as a major surprise (we hope) but Nokia's already fatally ill Symbian platform won't be gasping for air much longer in the United States. Now Nokia's U.S. President Chris Weber confirms that diagnosis in an interview with AllThingsD.

“When we launch Windows Phones we will essentially be out of the Symbian business, the S40 business, etc., ” Nokia Inc. President Chris Weber said in an interview. “It will be Windows Phone and the accessories around that. The reality is if we are not successful with Windows Phone, it doesn’t matter what we do (elsewhere).”

North America is a priority for Nokia, Weber said, in part because it is a key market for Microsoft and also because Nokia sees it as a key to winning in the smartphone battle globally.

“We’ll develop for North America and make the phones globally available and applicable,” Weber said. “In fact, evidence of that is that the first Windows Phones that will ship are being done by our group in San Diego.”

We also think it's interesting to note that Weber says their first Windows Phones are being produced in San Diego. It also just so happens that Qualcomm's main headquarters is based in San Diego as well, which we can't help but feel is more than just a coincidence. Moving away from our own conspiracy theories, we think Nokia may be making the right move here. It is difficult to redefine a brand when there's still old devices and ideas stinking up the place, so if Nokia really wants a fresh start they're going to have to clean house a bit. Exciting times ahead, people!
