Warning: JailbreakMe 3.0 Has Bugs

Users of a CDMA (Verizon) iPhone 4 planning to jailbreak may want to hold off on accessing JailbreakMe for now.

Coded by the iPhone Dev Team’s Comex, JailbreakMe 3.0 is the third installment (Comex’s second) of jailbreakme.com, the easiest way to jailbreak your iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.

It supports every device from iPhone 3GS up, including the iPad 2 with iOS versions ranging from 4.3 to 4.3.3 (for GSM devices and iPads) and 4.2.6 through 4.2.8 (for CDMA devices).

According to the author of the web-based hack, a bug in JailbreakMe 3.0 can cause iPhone 4 CDMA handsets to get stuck at the Apple logo and be unable to boot.

Those who’ve already taken the plunge can either restore to their stock firmware, or apply what Comex calls “a quasi-experimental fix.”

To restore, “Hold down the home and power buttons until you see ‘Connect to iTunes’, then use iTunes to restore to the latest firmware,” Comex explains. “This will lose data stored on the phone,” he warns.

To try and fix the issue, redsn0w is necessary.

Users must download redsn0w 0.9.6rc19 for Windows or Mac (under no circumstances are earlier versions to be used, says Comex) and use it to fix the bundle depending on their firmware version (4.2.6 / 4.2.7 / 4.2.8).

For those who couldn’t find a way to download redsn0w 0.9.6rc19 or the iOS 4.2.6 / 4.2.7 / 4.2.8 IPSW, Comex provides a few handy links in the troubleshooting document.

“Open redsn0w, select your IPSW, choose ‘Install custom bundle’, and select the fix bundle,” his instructions go. “Then follow the directions. If it works correctly, after installation your phone will boot normally,” he says.

Comex notes that JailbreakMe also has a separate bug where choosing "Re-jailbreak" would cause a device to be unable to boot.

Those who believe they are experiencing this issue are encouraged to contact the hacker by email.
