How to Upgrade to Mango -- Without a Developer Unlocked Phone!

Need your Mango fix and willing to void your warranty plus risk bricking your device for it? Make sure you read all of that because it's all true, and we caution you before you continue reading that you are aware of these risks. If you are not comfortable with any of this, you may want to avoid doing the Mango update in order to secure your peace of mind. Otherwise, continue reading.

The always reliable Windows Phone Hacker has discovered a new simplified method to allow anyone able and willing to upgrade to Mango to pursue it, without requiring a developer-unlocked (i.e. jailbroken) device. Here's a quick guide on how to do it:

What You Need:
  • Windows Phone Support Tool (32-bit, 64-bit)
  • Windows Phone Hacker Mango Tool (click here, scroll down to 'Update')

How to Do It:
  1. Download the tool
  2. Make sure Windows Phone Support Tool is installed (32bit, 64bit)
  3. Connect your phone to your computer
  4. Run the tool and follow on-screen instructions

Other Notes:
  • Close Zune before running Update.bat
  • Your backup is saved in [C:\\PreMangoState] and you will need it to restore back to NoDo in order to update to the official Mango update later this year.
  • Make sure you have enough space on your hard drive to keep your backup. For example, if you have a Samsung Focus make sure you have at least 8 GB of hard drive space available (but preferably more).
  • To restore NoDo, just run Restore.bat. Note that this restoring back to NoDo will not save any apps you have added since using Mango.

Good luck everyone, and remember to read all of the instructions VERY carefully. You wouldn't want a bricked Windows Phone for Independence Day, now would you?
