Google says Microsoft in bed with Apple for "hostile, organized campaign", a little late to the party

We've previously discussed Microsoft's smart and ruthless tactics to knock down Android a peg or two by suing manufacturers. Of course this abuses an already broken patent system in the United States but when a consortium of top technology companies (which included Microsoft, Apple and RIM) conspires to buy important patents together without the search giant included, it's clear Google isn't invited into the treehouse.

Now Mountain View's own David Drummond, Google's Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer, has laid down some smack talk against their patent-hungry competitors. Here's how he begins his rant, and boy is it juicy:

I have worked in the tech sector for over two decades. Microsoft and Apple have always been at each other’s throats, so when they get into bed together you have to start wondering what's going on.

Drummond goes on to talk about Android's astronomical growth being the key reason these companies want to stop Android in its tracks, and he's definitely right about that. We could go on about this for a while, but there's really only three things we want to say about his rant (which is a well-thought out read by the way).
  1. He's a little late to the party on this one. All of the things he's talking about went down weeks ago. It's surprising that no one at Google has directly addressed this before.
  2. We don't want to be rude, but complaining about it won't stop anything. The patent system is broken and companies are making use of that to rake in the profit. Unless there's a revolution over night, things won't change.
  3. Google doesn't have the right to be upset about this if the company doesn't want to take any accountability. You've left manufacturers high and dry to defend themselves, and that's part of why you're in this mess now.
We still recommend you read his post and understand Google's position on this by clicking on the source link. For the most part though, we think this pressure is the result of their own "open" promises being shortsighted.
