We got our first glimpse of Windows 8 almost exactly two week ago today but according to a comment made by a Microsoft vice president, we're going to be waiting a lot longer before getting our hands on it. While attending an event at Microsoft's Silicon Valley campus, Dan'l Lewin discussed the company's usual procedure when dealing with a new OS and may have given a hint of a Fall 2012 release:
“We’ve made the point about having a developer conference later this year,” said Lewin. “Then typically we enter a beta phase, and then in 12 months we’re in the market, so let’s make that assumption.”
Assuming the developer conference he referenced is BUILD, that even will be taking place this September and therefore we can assume from his comments that Windows 8 will release 12 months later. In other words, sometime around September 2012. He also made some interesting comments about competing with the iPad and Honeycomb tablets, calling it "a race":
Microsoft has been long critized for not responding to strong iPad and Android sales of tablets. Lewin addresses the criticisms by claiming Microsoft will get there in the end. “I think it will just be a race once we get in the market,” said Lewin. He also revealed that the new Windows 8 tablet UI started before the iPad was released. “We knew where we were going, we just have to get there faster. We’re executing as fast as we can.
Is Microsoft moving fast enough or will Windows 8 be left in the dust when it launches against the iPad 3 and Ice Cream Sandwich Android tablets? Tell us in the comments.
