Windows Phone May Go Dual-Core thanks to Qualcomm's MSM8x60

Whoops! It looks like Qualcomm's official site has made a slip up and may have accidentally given confirmation of dual-core Windows Phones in our future. Yessir, the company's official Snapdragon site has spilled the beans on Windows Phone support for the MSM8x60, the series of powerful dual-core chipsets found in the HTC EVO 3D and the HP Touchpad. Also, the chip can be clocked up to 1.5Ghz but knowing Microsoft's aim to preserve battery life will likely join its competitors at 1.2Ghz instead. We guess Qualcomm and Microsoft may have faked us out when they introduced support for the MSM7x30 and MSM8x55 at MIX '11,

Another thing worth noting is the GPU; currently all of the Snapdragons used in Windows Phones right now use Adreno 205, and the MSM7x30 and MSM8x55 will also include that GPU. What's interesting is that it appears Windows Phones will be benefiting from the Adreno 220 GPU from this new dual-core chipset, which will be another first for the lineup. If this is true, Xbox Live games are about to take a huge leap forward in graphical power!

What other goodies does the MSM8x60 include support for? Here's a quick laundry list:

  • HSPA+ up to 14.4mbps (Hello there, 4G Windows Phones!)
  • Stereoscopic 3D capture and playback
  • 1080p HD video recording and playback up to 30 frames per second
  • Full support for websites based on Flash 10 and WebGL
  • 16-megapixel dual-camera support (HTC Bresson?)
  • Dolby® 5.1 surround sound
  • HDMI Mirroring
  • Console quality and stereoscopic 3D graphics for mobile gaming, web graphics and customized 3D user interfaces
However take all of this with a grain of salt, because even though the chip is capable of all of these features Microsoft may restrict them from use (example: Flash has already been denied). So...are you excited yet?
