Shazam Encore Removed from the Marketplace After Negative Repsonse

Sigh. We warned you before when we featured the app on the site, and the day has finally arrived: Shazam just revoked their 'launch offer' of unlimited tagging from their free version. But wait, why did I refer to the app as the 'free version'? That's because the company just launched Shazam Encore, a more feature-filled app ringing up for $5.99 at the register.

With Encore you can enjoy exclusive features including unlimited tagging and Recommendations, as well as all Shazam’s features – identify a track, buy it, check out the videos, get the lyrics – and more.

It’s the slicker, faster way to discover more about music!

Upgrade your music journey with Encore:
• Unlimited tagging, so don't miss a music moment - tag as often as you like
• Identify what song is playing and buy the track direct on Zune Marketplace
• Get Music Recommendations to discover similar music
• View lyrics and sing along to tagged tracks
• Read album reviews, artist biographies and discographies
• Watch YouTube videos for tagged artists from within the App

* Lyrics available in US, Canada, UK, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Australia and New Zealand

As you can probably tell, this isn't going over very well with users as the free Shazam app has completely bombed in user reviews which is currently at two stars in the Marketplace, having dropped from about four. However, we have to take sides with the community on this one. It wouldn't even be so bad if Shazam removed unlimited tagging and the company introduced a paid version for up to $1.99, but the fact that Encore is a gut-punching $5.99 is just downright greedy. Now it looks like the overwhelmingly negative response has resulted in Shazam Encore to be taken down from the Marketplace. We're all for having those 'brand-name' apps that provide credibility to the Marketplace, but this is a clear example of those apps being a double-edged sword.
