IE9 for Mango is "Code Complete", Big Performance Boosts But No Flash

Easily one of the most exciting and significant additions included in Mango is Internet Explorer 9. The current version of Internet Explorer is fast and very responsive, but really lacks in competitive features. When talking to Techradar  Joe Marini, Principal Program Manager for IE on WP, promised that IE9 would change all of that. Marini said that IE9 is already "code complete" and the remaining work to be done is just squashing any left over bugs and tuning the gears up for performance.

Speaking of performance, the HTML5 "speed reading" test which was tested on Mango, Android 2.3, and iOS 4.0 at MIX '11 has jumped up in frame rate from 23 to 27. Basically this means that their performance tuning will be helping out with the overall smoothness of HTML5 sites and web apps once you get your grubby hands on Mango later this year.

Another topic that came up was the absence of Flash on Windows Phone so far, and the complete lack of news despite Adobe announcing support for the OS. Well even if Adobe does complete Flash for Windows Phone, Marini says IE9 won't be supporting it or any other plugins. The reason?

"We don't do stuff like ActiveX, we don't have browser helper objects, we don't have binary plug-ins. A lot of things that were security issues, we simply didn't do on the phone - a, because we didn't need them and b, for security."

We guess it's good we didn't include Flash support in our Mango Rumor Bingo sheet. So for now, don't get your hopes up for IE9 to support Flash. But what about Internet Explorer 10, the desktop version of which was announced at MIX '11? Marini doesn't say much, but does mention that once IE9 for Windows Phone is out the door they will be working on the next iteration "in parallel" with IE10.

The article goes deeper than that to talk about more of the technology behind IE9 that has changed, so check out the full post at Techradar.
