New Screenshots, More Info on Web-Based Marketplace

Yesterday's release of the Mango Development SDK also came with news that Microsoft was prepping a web-based Marketplace for Windows Phone. We assumed this would be similar to sites like WP7 App List, but Microsoft just unveiled a few details via their Windows Phone Developer Blog and it seems as though they're taking it a step further. Instead of just linking to the Zune desktop software, the web Marketplace will actually send over any downloaded apps "via SMS or email", although it's still unclear exactly how. It will also support a user's download history which will make reinstalling infinitely simpler than it is today. The web Marketplace is also supporting Parental Controls to manage what apps can be downloaded, which also suggests that the mandate for all apps to support this which was mentioned at MIX '11 is still going to happen. The web Marketplace will go live with the launch of Mango (this Fall).

We had one big question when we first heard about this: will we see Zune music and video content in the web Marketplace? The topic was never directly tackled in the post, but judging from the screenshot we have above we don't think it is likely. So far they're talking strictly apps and games, so we'll see exactly where Zune will be heading next sometime later.
