LiveSide has found out via @MS_Nerd on Twitter that Tuesday's Microsoft event could be expanding its scope further than just Windows Phone. Apparently, Zune is going to be officially killed off in name and will be rebranded under three groups: Xbox Mobile, Xbox Live and Windows Live Zune.
@MS_Nerd went on to say that Zune Pass will be 'merged' with Xbox Live Gold, adding more services to the subscription. They also suggest that Zune's backend platform (the tech and cloud services that powers everything Zune) will also be retrofitted into a new "Nokia services on Azure" which will be used to host multimedia content like Netflix, Last.fm and Hulu.
We have a hard time believing Microsoft would announce all of this alongside the already huge list of Mango features set to debut on Tuesday. However, a lot of this rumor makes sense. We're paying close attention to the hinted Xbox Mobile, which could mean we're looking at a spiritual successor to the Zune HD and a future iPod Touch, 3DS, and Sony NGP competitor built by Microsoft. This is all rumor and speculation, but if true this considerably raises the stakes for Tuesday's event.
Are you looking forward to an Xbox Live future for Windows Phone and Zune? Should Zune be killed off at all? What do you think about Nokia's content gamble?
