Ubuntu 11.04 is out and many of you have installed it and using it.Ubuntu 11.04 is the next version comes after Ubuntu 10.10.You already knows that Ubuntu uses Unity as a default Desktop Environment. In the previous version Ubuntu uses the GNOME as default Desktop environment. You may be feeling comfortable of using Unity. It is some what good as it comes with many new and exciting features. It has launcher(like Dock, shortcut to your frequently using applications) in the left of the window and much more. But you still need to customize it according to your style. So i will tell you some basic tips and tricks for Ubuntu 11.04 to customize it.
1.Update Ubuntu
After installing the Ubuntu 11.04 you need to Update it so that it can download and install all the basic packages. Also Updating Ubuntu will download the language support and latest support packages for the applications. You can Update Ubuntu by Running the Ubuntu Update Manager(just go to the Ubuntu Logo to open the Application search and search for Update Manager).OR you can type the following command in the Terminal.sudo apt-get update
2.Install Adobe Flash Player
Flash player is one of the basic thing you want to install in your Ubuntu after installing it.Without installing Adobe Flash Player you are unable to see all the flash images and videos on your web.So install it by going to the Ubuntu Software Center and search for Adobe flash Player.Install it then restart your Browser to see that all videos and flash images are now viewed.3.Customize Launcher
As i have already told you Unity Desktop comes with the Launcher in the left of the window. It comes with already added applications. You can add the applications which you frequently use and remove the application you does not want.Click on the Add option present in the launcher and just drag and drop the application onto the launcher.OR just run the application which will appear on the launcher from there you can click on to the Keep on Launcher.4.Customize Theme
Ubuntu 11.04 has classy themes such as Ambiance,Radiance,Dust, which was also present in the previous versions of the Ubuntu. But Ubuntu provides you lots more. You can install Themes of your choice and customize it.Just run the Appearance application (or right click on desktop and click on the change desktop background) and go to the Theme tab.Click on customize and you can see the options for changing color,Controls, window Border,Icons and Pointer. If you wants to install themes click on the install option in the Theme tab.Go to the theme file directory and click on open. You will see that the theme is appearing in the Appearance window from where you can choose or select it.
5.Changing Driver Partition Name
You can label your partition name or change.Give them sensible labels like Backups,Movies,Songs,Geek, whatever just like in Microsoft Windows.Open the application search from Ubuntu logo present on the top left corner and search for Disk Utility.Select the Hard Disk and select the partition you wants to label.Check that the partition is Unmounted first, then click Edit Filesystem label.Give the name and click on apply. You will that the partition name has been changed.6.Increasing Workspace
Ubuntu 11.04 uses the Unity Desktop which provides you Four Workspace. You can use this Workspace to Organize and handle your running application window.Providing four Workspace is sufficient for most of us and most of the time while using Ubuntu but,if you still wants to increase the number of Workspace, you can.Open the Ubuntu Software Center then go to the Edit Menu and click on Software Sources.Click on Other Software->Add.Type “ppa:geod/ppa-geod” and click on Add Source. Now go to search box in Software Center and search for Indicator workspaces and install it.
7.Tweak Ubuntu
Ubuntu Tweak is an application software used my most users of Ubuntu to configure it easily. After installing it you will have many desktop and system options which are generally not provided by default. You can install it by simply adding its PPA which is “ppa:tualatrix/ppa” in the same way as in the previous by going to Ubuntu Software Center->Edit Menu->Software Sources->Other Software->Add, And type the ppa.Again open the Software the Ubuntu Software and search for Ubuntu Tweak to install it.You can also run the following command in the Terminal and install it….
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/ppa(This command will add the ppa)
sudo apt-get update(This will install the Ubuntu Tweak)
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak
