It looks like those Bing rumors were true and the presentation confirmed that this Fall we'll be seeing "Visual Search" and "Music Search". The Visual Search looks quite impressive too: when the presenter held up the cover of a Miley Cyrus autobiography to the camera (not the serial number or a QR code) Bing recognized it. The demo even went beyond that and the search linked to a few sites that offered the book for sale as well as linked up to the Amazon Kindle app in order to purchase it and sync it to your phone. Very cool. Sadly Music Search wasn't presented, but I think we can all get the gist of it.
However, there was another new Bing feature that caught us by surprise: Local Scout. This feature basically recognizes 'neighborhoods' in cities and will show you a ton of information about them. Said info includes restaurants and events, plus you can associate contacts and groups with neighborhoods so you can have your 'NYC Friends' group associated with the SoHo neighborhood and Local Scout will show you all of that. Very neat stuff, and a real surprise to see. Finally, Bing is getting Indoor Maps which is exactly what you think it is for major public locations like malls. The demo showed off the Manhattan Mall indoor map and it was pretty impressive because they had the entire directory mapped to the different 'layers' and you could also browse for a specific store through a list.
