Download OS X 10.7 Lion for Free via Apple’s Up-To-Date Program

If you’ve bought a new Mac recently, you can ease off that Thunderbolt envy by learning how to apply for a free upgrade to OS X Lion, the eighth major iteration of Apple’s Mac OS.

Apple has confirmed that “Customers who purchase a qualifying new Mac Computer or an Apple Certified Refurbished computer from the Apple Online Store between June 6, 2011 and July 20, 2011 that does not include OS X Lion can upgrade to OS X Lion for free.”

This is old news for those who track Apple.

However, the company felt it was necessary to post a web page entirely dedicated to the OS X Lion and Lion Server Up-To-Date Program to inform that many customers will be permitted to download and install OS X Lion for free.

“If you purchased your computer from the Apple Online Store, an Apple Retail Store, or an Apple Authorized Reseller, follow one of these links to participate in the program,” Apple says.

Customers’ orders must be entered by August 19, 2011, Apple outlines.

Even those who purchase a qualifying Mac on or after July 21, 2011 can Apply for a free upgrade to Lion.

Customers must remember that they completed order must be entered within 30 days of their purchase of a qualifying computer.

Customers looking to pick up on the OS X Lion Server Up-to-Date Program have special Mac Server models to look out for, and pretty much the same rules as those enforced for OS X Client customers.
