Earlier today we broke the news that the official Foursquare app for Windows Phone had disappeared from the Marketplace. What's more, the Foursquare website was redirecting to the unofficial 4th & Mayor application instead of the official app. We suspected the Jeff Wilcox-developed application could have replaced the original to become the official Foursquare client, and sure enough that's exactly what has happened today. WPCentral reports the switch was confirmed by Russel Clark, Application Development Manager for Microsoft, via his Twitter page. Funny enough, Clark confirmed the news yesterday yet only one site to our knowledge, Windows Phone Sauce, managed to pick up on the news. Putting all of that drama aside, at the end of the day we've received a beautiful Foursquare app that has managed to replace the original (and inferior) solution. Consider this a win for developers, if you will.
Update: Russel Clark has taken to Twitter once again and while answering questions about the Foursquare dilemma, he responded to one question saying:
"Official app directly from FourSquare coming, @4thandmayor just recommended in mean time"
Then Clark linked to an article from an MSDN blog called Microsoft on ISVs in which the author revealed that an official Foursquare app is indeed in the works to replace the old one and that 4th & Mayor is only a temporary solution at the moment. Keep your eyes out over the next few weeks or months for news about the official social-location client for Windows Phone 7!
