Microsoft Addresses 7392 Update Issues with Samsung Phones, Other Questions

Eric Hautala has become the mediator between Microsoft and the community when it comes to Windows Phone updates, and today he returned to the Windows Phone Blog in order to address the new 7392 security update rolling out to phones across the globe. First off Hautala confirms that the HTC Surround is in fact finally receiving the long-anticipated NoDo update from AT&T, and he also notes that Australian Windows Phone owners can look forward to their updates anytime with Optus and very soon with Telstra.

However, it looks like the 7392 update is still running into some problems and once again Samsung phones seem to be the main culprits (or victims, if you look at it that way). This time Omnia 7 users have run into technical issues that are said to require, "a new update software package" in order to resolve. Luckily Hautala says that fix is nearly complete and Omnia owners can look forward to having their halted updates resume very soon. However the Samsung Focus seems to be running into more severe problems with updates, but some new information has been released to clarify exactly why that is:

To accommodate high demand for the Focus last year, two separate sources of flash memory components were required during manufacturing. Focus models are identical in all other ways.

Most Focus owners are receiving our updates. But some customers with handsets containing the alternative memory component aren’t. We’re now working closely with Samsung and AT&T to test and deliver an update for this group. As soon as I have more specifics, I’ll let you know.

Aside from those issues, Hautala returns to the 7392 update by saying the roll out is still being controlled by carriers but does confirm that if you didn't have NoDo before you will after the update process is complete. Microsoft is still running into a few bumps in the road, but they've clearly been doing their homework and this update seems to be rolling out much smoother. Admittedly, the update isn't deemed a major one like NoDo but the fact that Microsoft is improving the process at all gives us confidence Windows Phone updates might be better in the future.
