This is quite the surprise. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer made a cameo at today's BlackBerry World 2011 event and dropped a bomb: RIM is teaming up with Microsoft, specifically Bing. While the deal isn't quite as epic as Nokia's, when a major smartphone player like RIM allies itself with one of its rising competitors it's worth taking note.

But it's not as simple as changing the default search option or making apps. From the official press release:

"Blackberry devices will use Bing as the preferred search provider in the browser, and Bing will be the default search and map application for new devices presented to mobile operators [...] Bing is also now shipping as the default search experience, and map app, for the newly released BlackBerry Playbook. Together, we’ll also market and promote the strength of our joint offerings as “Making better decisions with Bing on BlackBerry."

Bing will also provide its services for Search, Maps, Voice Search, Location-Aware Search, and Panorama Stitching. Sadly, RIM won't be satisfying our dreams of seeing a BlackBerry running Windows Phone anytime soon but now that Microsoft has signed some ink with two of the largest smartphone market share holders in the world things could be getting pretty interesting from here on out.

Update: Article rewritten to include more details. Plus Bing released an official press release.
