Yesterday the Windows Phone Marketplace went down globally for almost 10 hours by some users' count. While it was eventually restored later in the day, Microsoft didn't have an official comment on the matter and only acknowledged that something had happened. Late yesterday, Michael Stroh returned to the Windows Phone Blog and finally offered a real response:
The Marketplace team has finished their investigation. Here’s the takeaway from them: “Earlier today some Windows Phone users were unable to download applications from Windows Phone Marketplace for several hours and instead received an error message saying, ‘Can't get this info right now. Check back in a little while.’ The problem was identified and fixed in a matter of hours. The Marketplace service is now fully available.
We regret any inconvenience this disruption caused the impacted customers and our developer community. The problem was the result of scheduled maintenance being performed on Microsoft’s infrastructure during the night. The root cause of this issue has been identified and steps are being taken to help prevent future disruptions to the Marketplace service.”
Admittedly, Microsoft didn't really offer the best response here; they failed to say exactly how the Marketplace downtime only affected NoDo users instead of all users, and why some (including us) were never running into the issue. At the end of the day, the Windows Phone team wanted to ease our troubled minds and not worry too much about the specifics, but if the entire global Marketplace could go down from just a maintenance mishap it's a little difficult not to worry.
