Uh oh. There was probably a good reason Microsoft decided to omit Windows Phone sales from their earnings report and now we may know why. According to Mobile-Review's Eldar Murtazin (translated from Russian to English), only about 674,000 Windows Phones were actually sold to consumers.
In 2010, Microsoft said it could put on the market (more precisely, they were producers, not the company itself), about 1.5 million smart phones with Windows Phone 7. Nice figure for a new OS, which is not too well known in the market. But what are the sales over the same period to end-users? Minus the donated phones and provided to its employees. Let's assume that figure my personal assessment, that there were no official investigations and persecutions of the staff Microsoft. So, Fasten. By my estimate retail sales totaled 674,000 units.
While we are currently unclear of what timeframe these sales account for, this is still clearly not good news for Microsoft right now. Eldar Murtazin is a very credible source too, as he correctly predicted Nokia's partnership with Microsoft earlier in the year. However, this is still considered a rumor because he could be wrong and we won't know the whole story until Microsoft confirms it themselves. Despite a booming Marketplace and a strong fanbase, that enthusiasm clearly hasn't translated into sales the way Microsoft was expecting.
